I need food ideas.

I am having trouble finding stuff to eat. I no longer eat scrambled eggs, omlettes, or eggs in general because I burned them out. Ground turkey is getting to that point also. Turkey chili ain't bad but I love chili and will be very upset if I spoil that meal. I may try haddock tonight again but I am not holding my breath. Chicken sausage and turkey keilbasa are good but I can only eat so much. I pretty much live on protein shakes, cottage cheese with light salad dressing and bacos on it, yogurt, and yogurt smoothies. I also just eat 2 string cheese sticks sometimes for dinner. I have tried the fake lasagne with cottage cheese but I think I am missing something in it. Is there an egg somewhere in that recipe? I did have refried beans a few times but it needs something else. I haven't even ventured into the realm of veggies yet besides what is in chili. Anyone got any other ideas? I have to stay away from beef, pork, and lamb.

Thomas, Still on “Soft Foods?” Canned veggies like green beans, well, in fact All Beans are good for that. Just about any veggies that are cooked to death too.

When I was at that stage, deli sliced meats were and cheese were always a stable.

Oatmeal with a little protein powder snuck in, English Pea salad was a biggie for me as well.  So was Tofu.  You should be advancing to just about anything soon…? What’s the doc recommending for you? One suggestion- When you add a new food to your typical intake, Try just adding one new thing at a time. That way, if it doesn’t sit well for you Finding the problem will be easy. Fairly soon, you’ll be eating just about whatever…. The “transition” times are the worst… I’m not sure where you are in advancing your diet so I don’t have much info to offer… Chicken salad yet? Best Wishes-

Dx

Thomas,   It sounds like you need more variety in your diet.  At six weeks out I was eating normal foods for the most part, as long as they were moist (baked fish or chicken worked well for me).  I stayed away from anything fried or tough chewing.  I was also eating steamed vegetables as well as fresh fruit and salads.   One of my favorite mini-meals is a meat-n-cheese rollup.  I take two ounces of low fat luncheon meat (ham or turkey), roll it around a cheese stick and dip it in horseradish mustard.  Depending on the brand, you get 15-18 grams of protein for a around 150 calories.  I generally eat them for a forenoon snack. As long as most things settle OK, you should soon be ready to expand your diet.  Just make sure it is all right with your doctor.

I think for the most part I am scared to try things. The last visit I had wht the nutritionist (4 weeks ago) she wanted me to start on veggies at my own pace and fruit with breakfast.  I was never really on a pureed/soft diet. Pretty much told to eat what I could, chew the crap outta it, and make sure it was moist.  I have tried the deli meat and cheese deal. I'll have to give it a shot again with horseradish, yellow mustard is getting old.

Thomas,   I was thinking about your post when I was eating my lunch today.  Have you tried doctoring up canned soups?  I was eating bean soup that I had added quite a bit of ham to.  After it simmers for a few minutes, the ham is tender almost to the point of being mushy.  It was rather tasty and very easy to eat.  You might experiment with adding extra meat to other soups as well.  Another suggestion is to cook with a crock-pot.  We do a lot of it at our house.  Because of the slow cooking with moisture any meat seems to come out falling-apart-tender and juicy.   Remember that variety is the spice of life so don’t be scared about trying new foods.  As long as you follow the rules you’ll be fine.  Once in a while you’ll find that something doesn’t sit well.  When it happens, learn from it and leave it alone for a few weeks.  Then give it a try again.  For me, after 10 months I still have to avoid bread.

Whatever you do, don't call me Rachel Ray, but I have a simple, quick and easy meal for you. Diced Chicken breast in a wok and fry pan. Cook it most of the way in just a little butter or olive oil. Add in a few spoons of canned black beans and then a good dose of Pace Picante Sauce. Simmer it down until it thickens. Throw in some shredded cheese, Mexican mix is my favorite. Toast a Mission low carb tortilla and enjoy! Takes ten minutes, is good for you and tastes great. There are almost no carbs in that meal, plenty of protein and an appropriate amount of calories. I have just bought some South Beach Diet frozen meals. Tried the first one and it was not too bad. I couldn't eat the whole thing. They might be worth checking out. Good luck. JP

I too like black beans and often eat them as a meal alone.  I make a chicken taco sald without taco shell.  I cut up chicken and cook it with taco seasoning.  I then put it in a bowl with black beans, lettuce sour cream, cheese, and taco sauce. Its a great meal if you don't eat too much of it.  If you must have some crunch then break 2-3 tortilla chips in the bowl.  Good luck
