Going through the hoops, you know, to get me a date.  Everything but the Psychological assessment and the fun chemical stress test is done.  I go yesterday to a Quack nearby, she sits and says, "Personally I believe it's best for someone considering this surgery to have a year in therapy before surgery and a year after surgery.  So she does her best to undress my 47 years while I give her Donald Duck answers knowing this was the last time I was going to see this Bioch.   What is a Psychological assessment and how long do they normally take?  Geez.....

Is the person your surgeon recommends? You want someone who is used to dealing with folks in your situation, not a run of the mill shrink.

I had a similar problem with my Psychologist.  Just remember, if she doesn't pass you, you don't have to give her permission to release the results and you can find another one. The guy I had came from the "Opra" school of psychology, and he saw having a pair as a mental disorder. There is a very good book called "You Can Negotiate Anything" by Herb Cohen that really helps in these situations.

Here in MA they are denying pretty much eveyone till they do a year of therapy. They guess that if you can lose weight in the year you don't need surgery.

Hi again, "Personally I believe it's best for someone considering this surgery to have a year in therapy before surgery and a year after surgery."  This really ****** me off  ! Sounds like she is trying to drum up some extra business and line her pockets. I never was a fan of shrinks to begin with. Reminds me of the "Diamond" people who say the standard amount to spend is three months salary on an engagement ring! Says who...the diamond people of course! I'm sorry the phsych eval didn't go all to well. Hopefully this will not be an issue in your journey! Here a few things one can share with their shrink:

Once I had multiple personalities, but now we are feeling well.

I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute.

I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not sure.

The best thing about being schizophrenic is that I'm never alone.

Just because you are paranoid doesn't mean people aren't out to get you!

Hypochondria is the only illness that I don't have.

I've always been a hypochondriac. As a little boy, I'd eat my M&M's one by one with a glass of water.

All the best, Chris

LOL Chris!

Actually she advertises herself as a 'Bariatric Specialist' and no my doctor didn't recommend her, his nurse just said it was up to me to find a quack to give me the assessment.

As far as the year is concerned, I don't know if I can make it another day let alone a Freaking year!  Understand Quack Biotch!  Gee Whiz.

Ugh...I have to agree with Tom Cruise on this one. Quacks are good for ducks. Mine tried to tell me I was bipolar because I didn't sleep well. I guess most obese people are bipolar, then. And no....I'm not bipolar. I told her I flat out disagreed with her snap assessment of my mental health, and was dissapointed that a clinician would base a diagnosis upon such thin qualitative data. She passed me, so who cares?

My shrink saw me for about 20 minutes....I was his last patient of the day, so I kinda had the feeling that he just wanted to blast through my assesment ASAP. Anyway, I think the only way he would've "flunked" me was if I was a total friggin' loon. At the end, he wanted to know if I had any questions for him...I asked what exactly would he see that would make him turn someone down...he said alcoholism, bipolarism, or basically someone who gave the whole process zero thought. So I thanked him, and split. He passed me.

Bob, Sorry you got a Boob for this part of the process. There’s a lot of them out there in that corner of the business. It’s really bad because it gives all of the Shrinks a stain on credibility, When Credible Psyche-docs are actually a much-needed part of the procedure. When it actually works, as intended--- The Psyche Eval is an important and integral part of the process. It should make sure that a person headed towards surgery understands that -"It’s not a Miracle- Magic Bullet," –"Have Realistic Expectations,"

-"They need a support system in place to help make the Extreme Life Change ahead," –"They make sure that there are no ‘Emotional Eating problems, Binge Eating issues, or Compulsions that could keep a patient from being one of the 3 out of 10 people who fail to loose their excess weight with WLS."

Once that’s clear, then there should be no "sales pitch" to push Psyche-Therapy onto someone who doesn’t need it. It’s a shame that some Head-Docs don’t understand their role in the process, But maybe that’s what accounts for 30% of the people having WLS still going into it ill-prepared for success. I see some folks on the message boards everyday that thought it would be as easy as a tonsilectomy and are horrified once they find themselves grieving for food and not having even a basic understanding of what they got themselves into. The "2 years out and I’m Bingeing on Chocolate!!!—Help!" –posts are the ones that are really sad. In such instances, I wonder how they ever got through any sort of "pre-screening" from a psyche-doc. Certainly not one who had a clue as to the needs and stresses on a Bariatric-Post-Op. So it’s particularly distressing when someone hits a shrink who has an "agenda" that seems to be about pushing therapy rather than pre-paring a patient or actually checking to make sure "they Get it." Such Quackery gives them All a bad name, When often (30% of the time) They are very much needed. Hope you have smooth sailing to succes, Best Wishes-
