I am a 54 year old male post op lapbander. My band was placed 6/21/06. On Jan 7, 2007 I was involved in an automobile accident which shattered the socket of my left hip. I was walking 2 to 3 miles daily as well as 15-30 mins on various weight machines in the gym. I was down about 105 lbbs as of 1/05/07. Last week I was able to get on the scales and I had lost another 10 lbs. Obviously, I am not able to continue the walking for quite sometime (the orthopedic Doc says I will need at least a cane for about a year). Any suggestions to get my exercise and activity in-I am now at 255 and want to reach 195 by September. Any suggestions welcomed. Thanks, Bob

Bob That is great that you continue to loose weight even after your car accident. Being Bed-bound must have been real tough. From my perspective after I Was banded, (and due to some pain in my knee's) the exercise I chose was swimming. Some folks think that doing laps (and to be honest) I do a lap, I rest- do another then rest. It did and does make a big difference and is so low impact that you really can not do any further damage. I have moved on to other activities (treadmill, Circuit Training etc) but I always end my workout with 30 minutes of laps in the pool Here is hoping you heal fast Chris

Thanks Chris-I am not yet cleared to swim. I am limited to toe touch on my left side. It will be another month or so before I can do any weight bearingon the left. I am using a walker, crutches or a wheelchair for mobility at this point. (the chair only when I venture out of the house)

Bob, Sorry to hear about your accident. Hopefully you'll bounce back quickly. With some exercise you may be able to help out your recovery also. Kinda like a personal rehab. Try a stationary bike on a low setting. Even if it is low resistance you should be able to get in a good workout with just repitition. You may want to even see if you can use an eliptical.

Bob, Congratulations on losing over 100 pounds. Are you seeing a physical therapist? Perhaps they could suggest weight training or exercises for your upper body that would not stress your injured hip. What ever you do, don't do anything without clearing it with your doctor or therapist first. Hopefully the recovery from your accident will be swift and complete, without affecting your weight loss. Good luck to you and keep us informed as to your progress. May Your Lantern Burn Bright, Paul

Bob, I just noticed that you are from Mechanicsville, VA. Wasn't there a Civil War battle there where Lee turned the tide on McClellan's Peninsular Campaign and march on Richmond? I'm a Civil War buff and someday want to take a tour of the CW battlefields. May Your Lantern Burn Bright, Paul
