Topic: pain question

I will be having my bypass on Feb 8.. at Emerson Hospital so if you  have had surgery there and would like to share your experience that would be great.  I am having so many mixed feelings because I am nervous..  After the surgery is over and you are moved to recovery area is pain medication given prior to them waking you up.  I am also wondering at that point when you wake up how was your pain? I know people have different response to pain so answers will vary.  Thanks

My surgery isn't until March so I haven't started my preop liquid diet, but I also have to be on one for 2 weeks.. I'm gradually starting now.. I usually have a protein drink for at least breakfast sometimes lunch just to get used to it.. because I have to be on a liquid diet for 4 weeks after surgery too so I'm trying to ease myself into it plus it is just a good diet, I've lost 10 lbs in a few weeks.  I think after surgery will be a lot easier because we hopefully won't feel hungry!! Keep going.. don't give in, I'm rooting for you!

Congrats on your surgery! How are you doing post op besides the food intake?

Thansk for replying. I definitely needed the support. I am glad someone can fully relate but 3 weeks?!?! jeez. Im so exhausted it seems. Im glad you get the energy back...I never sleep this late. haha. Oh well. Maybe the more I sleep or keep busy the more I wont think about all the amazing foods Im missing out on (even if they are evil and make me fatter..haha). I guess its more my mental state about it all. I can even see it when I type things like "amazing food Im missing out on" because Im not missing out...im making a life change and who said that would be easy. lol. Ill be fine Im sure and yes! I know Im close. I cant wait. Maybe I should try focusing on that!

Thanks

Haha. yea. I will try walking but I cant go to a mall. Ill buy everything justifying it with it being what keeps me busy and distracted. (since my job ended yesterday, i think its better to stick to the streets for walking..even if they are covered in mounds of snow!) Im still on the hunt for a new job so Ive just been keeping busy with that but Im already getting stir crazy and this is when I would normally eat..when I am bored. I didnt realize just how bad Id gotten til I was focused on restricting it. lol. wow.

Anyway, yea..im not really nervous anymore. Maybe I will be day of. Plus I feel like if Im doing all this work now for the surgery that will ultimately make my life 100% better why shouldnt it excite me?!?! lol

Thanks for the support. Feel better with the tonsil thing you just had. How long til you heal from that? and nice pics btw. lol. Love the sling thing. Very fashionable. :P (and the cute doggy of course!)

Thanks

Awww. Tom, my bf, is similar. he orders for two still. its kinda funny actually when it wasnt even a thought before and now its all i think about. I will try the mall walking and ideas for distractions. I tried watching a movie on tv and all these food commercials kept coming up like its taunting me. I swear I went to the kitchen like 3 times last night looked in the fridge and then closed it and ran back to the living room. lol

I hope this goes away. I cant bare the thought of having to be like this evil food longing creature for two more weeks. haha. I also cant wait til food doesnt look so tasty to me anymore. lol

But I have to say, I am full. Im just eating with my eyes I guess because after those shakes, Im not starving...Im practicing sipping like they said so no gulps and its making the shake take longer to be consumed therefore by the end I am sorta full. So yea. lol

And yes. he thought the porn comment was funny too. he nearly spit all his food out at me when he realized I was pretty much serious. haha. Oh boy! Day 4. here I come!

L

ps- thanks for the support and Im glad you are doing well! Congrats love!

It does get easier!  My pre-op liquid diet was 3 weeks, and the first 4-5 days were the worst.  After that I wasn't so hungry, and I also had a little momentum going so felt good about having made it that far, which kept me going for another day, which in turn made me feel better, and so on.

I was on liquids for 1 week post-op as well, and I have to say that when I had my first real food (an egg at 8 days post-op) nothing ever tasted so good!  I'm 3.5 weeks out now, and still only eating protein, so I'm missing the things I can't have yet (fruits and veggies get added next, then starches), but it's a lot easier when I can now order chicken parm for myself if I'm ordering pizza for my kid and friends!  You'll get there... think of how close you are!

I totally agree w/ CJ too ... get up and go for a walk or window shop! After my surgery my mom and I would go shopping just so I could get out of the house and walk. I had my surgery right before Christmas so she would get her last minute shopping done and I would walk around the store holding my stomach like I was pregnany and about to pop LOL. Walking and getting even a little bit of exercise does take your mind off of things!!

I feel your pain !! I didn't have a liquid diet before surgery but being on it now after getting my tonsils out is pure torture again! Its funny because I feel like I did just after I had my bypass ... it is bringing back to many memories LOL

It is tough to see people eat and to see all the yummy food on tv. In the end it is totally worth it though! At least having the liquid diet now you will be well prepared for after your surgery. Its funny because after your surgery you will have to force yourself to eat and remember to eat!! You won't be hungry at all and you will look back at your pre-op diet and laugh!!

I do feel that your pre-op liquid diet is a very long one!! I don't know how I could survive 2 weeks pre-op doing it ... so MAJOR KUDOS to you for doing it and surviving so far!!! I know it much easier said than done but try not to think about it too much ... if you start to feel hungry get up and take a walk maybe or do a little exercising. It might help to take your mind off of food for a little bit!!

You are going to be the next one on the losers bench with us .. I'm already movin' over for ya!!! Can't wait for you to join us

p.s. I wasn't nervous or sad before surgery either .. just hungry and excited too LOL
