I weigh 235-240 am 5'4" wear an 18 or 20 and have been approved for open RNY. I carry my weight well and when I tell people I am having the procedure they are shocked - they think I am crazy! Even the MD had me get on the scale twice! I need to lose 100 lbs- I have arthritis and pseudotumor cerebri (a fat womans disorder only cured by weight loss) - HERE IS MY QUESTION- can I lose too much weight? Anyone out there with a BMI close to mine post op? Thanks! DAWNA H.

i was in very similar shoes. i weighed 227 at 5'3 and had a BMI of just 40. i, fortunately, had no co-morbidities, but a dangerous family history of heart disease and diabetes. i needed (still need) to loose 100 lbs too. like you, i am told i carry my weight well and i did not need surgery. whatever that means! i am not healthy and thats all i know and i did not want to gamble with my life and wait for things to deteriorate! i had lap RNY on 2/15/05. i wont tell you it has been fun! lots of nausea and vomiting, over 1 week in the hospital and a general lousy feeling! however, things have gotten better and i am down 31 lbs. it is trully a whole life style change. right now i cannot go out to eat of even to bars b/c though i crave food, i cannot compromise the decision i made. its tough, but only you can make the choice for yourself! you will get lots of opinions and advice, take it, but remember it is up to you!!!! =)

Hi Dawna, I am 5'5" and weighed 250. I needed to lose 100 pounds and the surgery helped me to do that. I feel so much healthier now. I can walk with no pain in my feet. Blood pressure and blood sugar are no longer a problem. I do not feel that I have lost too much weight. I now bounce between 130 and 135 pounds. Seems reasonable and healthy to me. Good luck!

Hi, while I strarted out at a heavier wieght I am now at 239 and am 5'5". I still have 100 to lose, if I can. Most people are shocked when I say I started at 347, they don't believe me. I cannot imagine staying at this weight and being truly healthy. Whiel others may say you look great and "carry your weight well", only you know how you feel inside. If you are hurting and anticipate more helath trouble, I would say go for it. It is not a bed of roses but neither are diabetes, joint disease and complications from high blood pressure and not too mention what most of us where heading for heart trouble. Good Luck!!
