Have just been informed by UMASS that MassHealth DOES NOT cover lapband surgery, although they will cover bypass. I'm begging anyone with contrary evidence to share it with me. I am so frustrated to just now be learning this, after going through this G.D. process for nearly 1 year. Why didn't they share this info with me up front?! If anyone has good news on this topic, I am all ears (And lots of thigh, too!) LOL!!!

Hey Samalantha, I was glad to see you on here. Sorry to hear the bad news. Most insurances still do not cover lap band surgery. I was originally going with that surgery. I am no going with gastric bypass, knowing the I would probably be turned down for the lap band. I am now waiting on whether I am covered for the gastric bypass yet. I wish you well. I would try to appeal it. I don't know what they will say, but it is worth a shot. Take care and let me know how it works out for you! Brenda (NCHS)

Samalantha A year ago no Massachusetts insurance companies covered the band. Now Tufts, BCBS and Harvard cover the band. So things are changing fast. I know that many people are approved on appeal. You might get some better answers if you post your question on the lap band forum, it is very active. Here is the link. http://obesityhelp.com/morbidobesity/surgtype-forums/LapBand/posts.html Richard

Hey, Umass cant tell you that Masshealth doesnt cover it. The situation and decision varies with each individual. I know i called Masshealth prior to attending any meetings for the surgery and i got it in writing that they WILL cover it as long as thay recieve and approve a letter from your surgeon. I have only got Mass health Basic. I have also talked with people who have written letters thenselves and sent in pictures so that would aid in their approval. I would call they and ask them yourself, and ask for it in writing. Then bring it or fax it to your surgeons office. GL and best wishes. Niesha Johnson Current/ Goal 280 / 160 TTC:7/2/02
