Hungry!

A question for those who have already had surgery or are scheduld soon: how did you manage the weeks leading up to it?  I'm scheduld for bypass on 1/3/11, and started the HMR 500 liquid diet yesterday (they want me on it for 3 weeks, because I didn't lose enough leading up to it).

I'm doing exactly what I'm supposed to (at least, I think I am): 5 shakes/day (or the chicken soup flavor), made with water, and at least 64 oz of additional water.  I don't dislike the shakes, which was a big relief... I worried that they would taste awful.  I've mixed in a tsp. of sugar free jello mix a couple of times, and last night I did make my final shake with milk instead of water, and added a bananna.

The problem is, I'm starving!  By 2 pm yesterday, all I could think about was food.  Today, I've had 2 shakes so far... planning another early this afternoon, one when I get home from work, and the last one before bed.  With 19.5 days to go, I'm really hoping I won't be this hungry or worse the whole time!

I go back to see the Physician's assistant next week, but in the meantime, I'm hoping someone who has been there can tell me if I'm doing something wrong.  I'm having my surgery at Lahey Clinic, if that makes a difference; I know the approach/requirements can vary between hospitals.

Thanks!

Hi!  I didn't have to do a liquid diet (or any restrictive diet for that matter) so I can't give the best advice.  I do think 3 weeks with only shakes is a little extreme ... that would kill me! LOL

Mixing in SF jello and fruit is a great way to make shake - you can also look for DaVinci and Torani (or any other brand) of SF syrups - they are great in the shakes.

I've had the surgery already and I have some days where I am starving as well!

It doesn't sound like you are doing anything wrong!!  A liquid diet is pure hell whether or not you've had the surgery..

You are right - every hospital and program is different.  I had my sx done at Tufts and we did not have to be on any special diet leading up to surgery (they wanted us to try out the high protein, low fat & low sugar diet of course but no special diet was 100% required)

It will get easier ... I know it may not seem like it but it will :)
