I live in MA and am interested in the Rounx-en-Y.  Unfortunately, my insurance (UHC) will not pay due to expemption.  Would anyone share their story and give me an idea what I can expect to pay?  Also, will insurance cover costs if there are any complications down the line?  I don't see any exemption, but not sure.
Thanks!

I didn't have to self pay, but I was quoted from the billing dept at $35k ..for a 3 night stay less 20% for paying cash/credit card for $28,000 estimate.
I was also told by my physician if the procedure was done at an outlying hospital..it would be cheaper...for Brigham has the highest rates vs. Falkner, vs Norwood, vs. Newton Wellesley..etc.
See if there is a way you can get on insurance...is there an employer that you could work for 3 mos even part time...and be eligible..even if you pay that premium.  Some people have told me that they sign up for MassHealth /Connector as their 2ndary insurance and that can step into pay when the first insurance won't pay.
As far as complications...I have heard both way...if you self pay..you are responsible all the way through for complications, and I have heard otherwise...that your regular insurance company will pay. You will proberly need to call your insurance on that question..and get the reference number to document the call.
good luck.

thank you for taking the time to reply. The price you were quoted, what hospital was that from?  I'll check  the MassHealth / connector.  Are you happy with your outcome?

my fees quoted were from B &W.  I am happy with my decision. I am not a skinny minny...but I weigh less than I did before. It is a struggle to keep it off...but the struggle is easier than wihtout the surgery.

Starbucks insurance covers RNY and many people have gotten jobs there to get the coverage.  Newton-Wellesley does NOT accept self-pay people.

That's about all i know on the topic.

Good luck!

If I understood UMass' policy correctly, they charge $350 for everyone whether they have insurance or not.  Check them out.  ;-)  I hope I heard them right...
