Discouraging 1st. Intake Appointment........

Hello all, new to the forum here!

Thought I would vent, and ask others how their first intake appointments went with doctors regarding the surgery. I went about a week ago, and wasn't too happy walking out the door. The doctor seemed like a nice guy, but when he went over my file and asked me questions he seemed to try and talk me out of the surgery completely. Has this happened to anyone else before?

I currently weigh 300 pounds at 6ft. tall. My BMI is @ 40% they say I am eligible for the surgery but the doctor thinks a different approach might be within my best interests, and that I am (borderline).  I have already made up my mind that I want the surgery done. I have several friends that have had it done and they have nothing but good things to say about it.

I have yo-yo dieted several times in the past, being somewhat successful loosing 20-30 pounds but only for a short period of time. The heaviest I have weighed was 305 @ (not too long ago). When I was 18, I weighed 235.  I am afraid that if I don't do this within the next few years my weight will continue to climb.

I have no medical problems other than being overweight and feeling it in my joints, shortness of breath ect... My job forces me to work overnights and that can not change. My appetite is through the roof! Hoping to get some feedback from other members of the site. The doctor did say that he is going to continue my appointments with a behavioral and nutrition specialist, and we can take it from there. Any input or advice is greatly appreciated. I have an appointment today to see a behavior doctor; we'll see how it goes........

Thanks to all in advance, hope your own journey is going well.........

Are you limited to that particular hospital/surgeon?  If you didn't get I would find another doctor who you mesh better with or at least to get a second opinion.

When you say talk you out of it, do you mean telling you about the risks?

I would have to agree with Dragon....

Go for a 2nd opinion if your insurance allows it.   I'm in the program at Tufts in Boston I have nothing but the best to say about everyone in the program.  It's well worth the drive into Boston.  I meet Dr Shikora tomorrow and hopefully will have a surgery date

Hi, I agree with the other posters.  Go for a second and even a third opinion.

I'm throwing in another vote for a second opinion.  We obviously don't know your whole history, but I think it be great for you to hear what another surgeon has to say.

Had my appointment with the behaviorialist today, and it was great! She was very nice and understanding regarding my situation. She did tell me that the doctor that I spoke with did sign off for me to continute on the surgical track, so now I have to wait for my appointment with the nutritionist. Unfortunatley the appointment is not until the end of July, but I am on the waiting list hoping someone cancels! She did say that I should expect to have surgery near the end of October or into November. Thanks to all that replied, this forum is a wealth of knowledge and it is nice to talk with others that have had this done before.
