Im most likely having my surgery in April and I was wondering if everyone loses their hair?  Does it really grow back?  Is it the same when it grows back???  This is what I'm most worried about because I already have thinner hair.

Some will tell you that everyone loses hair. I know people that have had RNY that have not had any hair loss. I am just over 3 months out and haven't lost any yet. Some people lose hair with pregnancy too. I didn't with 5 pregnancies. I hope to be a non-loser! Do your best from the beginning to get your protein in and take your vitamins.... then hope for the best :)

I've started losing recently - just before the 3 month mark.  I have fine hair, but a lot of it.  I wouldn't have noticed except for the shower drain.  I've cut it shorter and expect that no one will ever notice the thinning unless I'm some kind of extreme case.  Most people I've talked to said that no one notices except them and their hair stylist... and yes, it grows back.  And no, not everyone loses it.

I was totally worried about the same thing, but somehow going from a 24 to a 14 in 3 months has made me less concerned...and no one's is looking at my hair!

hi,

I had my surgery last May. I had my hair cut very short and quit getting perms. I still have my hair colored every four weeks. I would say that I have my usual hair loss (accounting for my new hair length) as before.

i too lost hair around the 3 month mark. IT was everywhere...on the pillows, the shower, the sink area, the bathroom floor. I typically have a lot of very fine hair with some waves. Where I noticed it most was the sides versus the top. I was able to fluff the top,but the side was not so easily fixed. I am now 7 months and it is coming back...no more losses.   I also typically keep my hair short, and I extended the time between those haircuts.
People also talk of biotin that can be taken.

I had surgery 9 months ago and did a lose a little. But not enough that someone would notice. The thing is ...since you know it might happen...you'll be looking for it. So your brush might have more hair in it than usual and that is when the panic starts. I had longer hair and it was starting to look thin so I cut it short and that helped with the look of it.

You could also take biotin. Or GNC makes something called "Hair, Nails, and Skin". I've heard it does wonders for your hair.

I noticed hair loss around the 3rd month --  I would have hair in my fingers when I washed my hair!  I have thin hair anyway, so I was worried about losing hair too.  -- It turned out to be not a big deal at all.  Even I couldn't actually see the hair loss --  only knew it was happening when I washed my hair, and it was falling out.  It happened for a couple of months and then stopped.  It's all good now!

I had my surgery in April 2008, and around mid-July I started losing it. I lost a lot, and pretty steadily until the fall.
It stopped & now it's back & thick- not as thick as it was before, but it's good.

People will tell you there's things you can do to stop it, but there isn't. If your body is inclined to lose hair due to trauma from surgery and anesthesia, you just have to go with it. Most people I know who had the surgery experienced some type of hair loss. I was afraid of it, but it ended up really not being that bad.
