another newbie with NHP
Hi,
I have my first appointment with a surgeon on 1/13. I attended an informational seminar last month. I haven't decided on lapband or RNY yet...I'd like to research it as much as possible and hear as many opinions as I can. I'm ready! I'm 33 and have a BMI of 43. Sweets are my thing. Also I have NHP for a health insurance...I was wondering if I have to attend classes for this insurance company as well as attend the mandatory meetings through the weight loss program at Toby hospital??? Thanks in advance for all of your help.

Welcome! You've come to a good place to ask a lot of questions. Lord knows I asked TONS of questions before I finally had my surgery and now I ask tons more.
We all chose our surgeries for different reasons. I knew pretty fast that the band wasn't for me, but plenty of people find it is right for them. I recommend checking out the boards for RNY and LapBand and hear what people say. Also, your surgeon may help you decide. I chose RNY because it was the "gold standard" in American bariatrics, it often had an immediate impact on type 2 diabetes, and it had the potential promise of "dumping syndrome" which is negative reinforcement for eating sugary/fatty things. Since my surgery I have only "dumped" on peanut butter, which contains sugar and fat. I have tried some fatty things and been ok, so I'm thinking it's the sugar. In any case, I've been enjoying lots of artificial sweeteners when I want something sweet and continue to eat low fat.
Good luck!
Sue

Hi! Welcome. I can't tell you about NHP insurance, but give them a call - you may be pleasantly surprised by what they will tell you! Also the hospital's administrators should be able to help you with the insurance issues. I consulted with two different hospitals, and both recommended the RnY to me, so that is what I went for. I also chose Laproscopic versus Open surgery - which meant a different hospital, than the one that I first thought I'd go with. You may also want to check the DS forum out - that is another type of WLS. It's a lifestyle change, but one for your life (literally!). Embrace it and you'll do great!
