Surgeon for Teen
I think the age has something to do with the FDA prescrbed approval. Just like right now they can't arbitrarily do RNY surgery on non-obese due to diabetes. For the teens, there was a few years ago a band-study ( clinical trial ) in NY for teens. Same for the diabetes..there is a clinical trial at TuftsNEMC.

Even if you find a surgeon you will probably not get insurance approval... There are legal issues and with the child being a minor it is just very very complex.
Being a mother I would not get the childs hopes up for having surgery anytime before they are legally an adult...It could cause very negative repurcussions in someone so young. Tis has to be entirely her ( or his) choice and commitment... for life...nobody elses..and whoa if something went wrong who do you think they will blame for the rest of their life... ( not themselves!)
I would also be concerned about the vitamin deficiencies and long term growth issues with an RNY in someone so young...It's just a real hard call to make for a minor and there are a lot of arguments against altering someones body when they are still growing, still maturing and under age...
psyche evaluation? nutrition understanding? lifestle changes? how much of that stuff will really sink in? It's just such a tough call...
I hate to be negative but all instincts are just screaming NO WAY.... She has to try to tackle this on her own and make the decision because she knows it is right for her... I hate to say it but I would stick with working on proper eating and exercise for now...it's too young. An if she really wants to go through SHE needs to sigh the consent forms and take the resopnsibility...

actually I have done an extensive amount of research regarding this, even before I made the decision to have my own surgery. there are some awesome stats coming out of cinncinati where they are performing RNY on teens.
she has tried a fat camp, WW, all the usual stuff that everyone else has been thru, and just struggles and struggles with the weight. my insurance will pay for her to have the surgery as long as she is at her max growth potential.
this isnt something im pushing on her and she definately understands how hard it is to get thru the post op period and ongoing because she watches me. she would of course go thru all the counseling, evals etc that i went thru prior to my surgery.
i have to weigh the risks for her. she is very very overweight at this point and her life is miserable, high school being very difficult. she has sleep apnea, pain in her knees, hypertension....everything except diabetes. its only 1.5 years to wait if i have to fine. i will continue to gather information as im doing now. 16 is too young to die of complications from being overweight....weve all been there at some time in our life. she takes her life and others in her hands when she drives...makes decisions that all high school kids struggle with. with enough information, she will make the decision eventually for this as well...

i still struggle daily with getting my protein and water in, but each month it seems to improve....hope things are going well for you,
