Hello,

I am finally exploring OH and thought I would introduce myself now that I have an idea of how to navigate the sight :~)

I am 28 years old, married with two boys (1 and 4 yo) and live just outside of Worcester.  I teach children with severe emotional and behavioral disorders.  I had surgery 7/15/08 (two weeks ago) and am already down 25lbs to date!! I am so excited!!

I am definitely having trouble consumimg the suggesed 60-80 grams of protein and 64-128 oz of fluid.  Any suggestions?  The isopure just isn't doing it for me - the after taste stinks.  And those powdered shakes are to chalky.  I know I should just suck it up - but its hard, especially since fluids are all I can have.

I am looking for people who are open to answering any questions that may arise as well as individuals who may want to share successes and challenges.

Thanks!

Amy

Hi Amy --welcome and congratulations!

I had my surgery the week before you!    I did use the Isopure..the blue one and I would have 2 carnation inst. breakfasts(with lactose free milk).   I am thinking you are close to changing over to stage 3 if that how your doc does it.    Will they let you have yogurt...or if they want thin items..you could milk down your yogurt yet still get the protein in.

I am sure others here, and on the RNY Forum  will be able to offer up some good advise.

Thanks for the reply.  I meet with the doc next Wednesday- I am guessing I will be moving on to stage 3...I hope so.  I will try the blue ISOPURE next.  Thanks for the suggestion.  I am having yogurt, milk, and creamy soup - but they don't have more than 8 g of pro. for about 100 cal.  I'll give the blue a try.

Thanks,
Amy

Hi guys, I had my surgery 7/23 was home on 7/25 and back in on 7/27 with severe abdominal pain. What they found out is I'm now lactose intolerent and was making me CIB with skim milk, and also drinking atkins protein shakes which are NOT lactose free, so now I'm home again after being rehydrated and doing the isopure, and also having trouble getting my fluids in. It would be nice to keep in touch with people that are going through the same things. I am actually 3 lbs UP from when I had the surgery, I'm assuming it's from all the fluids they pushed in the hospital...then again I haven't had a BM yet...thats another problem, no matter what I take its not helping ugh! thats really frustrating! Hope you guys are doing well!

Wow that really stinks - though I am so glad it wasn't more serious.  So, this must be extra tough for you then - to get in all your fluids.  When did you get re-released from the hospital?  I read it was common to "gain" weight the first week - from all the fluids they give you in the hospital.  You'll start losing real soon.  Are you taking colace for the BM? Yes, lets surely keep in touch about our progress.

First, WELCOME to OH!  You will find it a great source of support and information.

I am new to the Mass board (just moved to Worcester in June), but was on the NH Board for the past year.

I remember those first few weeks after surgery.  My NUT had suggested adding protein powders to soups and yogurts, and the glasses of milk, so that it ups your protein intake.  I found that the 100% whey proteins from GNC were what worked for me.  In fact, at 15 months out, I will still add a scoop to my CIB in the morning.  I LOVE their Chocolate Caramel flavored one, as well as the Banana Creme.

Best wishes in this new phase of your life.. you will LOVE IT !!

Try all the flavors of the Isopure - the only ones I could tolerate were the pineapple (yellow) and the alpine punch (red).  Try mixing half with water and sip as part of your fluids.  I became lactose intolerant and also could not stand any of the protein powders -- but now at four months out I am able to eat just about anything.  Do the best you can, and try not to worry too much about it.  It gets a lot easier as your pouch heals.
