I got "the call" today-- my insurance approved the surgery, and Im scheduled for Feb. 28th. Now...my only issue is..what do I do with my 3 kids that day? They will be back in school, as vacation is the week before. My boys are 11, 8, and 5, and I dont want to leave them home alone for a whole day. Do you think that since the surgery is only supposed to take about 90 minutes, my husband should just bring them along to keep him company? Once Im in recovery, and he knows Im ok, they can leave, as I will most likely just want to sleep. What do you all think?

wow, congratulations! i'm a week out today! they told me surgery could take anywhere from 2 to 4 hours. mine took a little over 2 hours. the hospital is about 45 minutes away. my kids went to school and my husband drove me in. i told him to just go home because there was nothing he could do. my husband's not the googoo gaagaa type to sit there and hold my hand like in the soaps. the doc. said he'd call him as soon as it was over. they came to visit me the next night. believe me, you probably won't want company (at least i didn't). maybe you will. i felt so gross and fat and full of gas that i didn't even want my own mother there. my kids are 13 and 15 and they were bored. Good Luck!

Congrats on the date. Are you have a bypass of the lapband? Is there anyway you can find someone to watch them. I wouldn't leave them home all day, alone, because you never know how long you will be. There can be a delay because of the person before you etc. Also, I'm not so sure they wouldn't get crazy sitting in the waiting room. Also, some recovery rooms won't let children in, so if they wanted to come in and see that you were OK afterwards, there is no guarantee that they would be able to. Maybe a friend can help you out..in a time of need. Maybe your husband can drop you off and then go back home.?? Leslie

I don't know what time your surgery is, but I sent my children to school and kept them on their regular schedule. My husband drove me to the hospital he then stayed with me until I was settled in my room after surgery. He then went home and was home for the kids after school. My children are older so he really didn't need to be home. I had 12 year old twins and a 10 year old at the time of surgery. Why wouldn't you send them to school? I spoke to my children at least three times a day while I was in the hospital. They came to visit me the second day and thet were fine and happy to see me as I was happy to see them. I beleive keeping children on a routine is very important but that is just my opinion. Congratulations on your date! Best of luck.

I agree, I would like to keep them in school, it all depends on how early I have to be at the hospital . I dont want them to have to wait for the bus, etc. If my husband or I are not there. I guess I'll have to wait and see what time my surgery is. Thanks for the reply.

Congratulations on your date!!. I just had my surgery last week...We thought the same thing, be in and out into recovery in an hour......wrong took about 2 1/2 hours before I was in recovery....... then another 4 hours before into my room...My husband was a wreck because it was taking so long.... He was waiting at home (my mom was with me) but ended up coming in and left my 3 boys 16,12 and 9 with my father in-law... I also thought that I would be released the next day around 10:00 am wrong.....did not get discharged until 7:30 pm... You may want to try and get a sitter, the kids may get bored at the hospital. Best of luck!!
