I just got home from the hospital on Thursday (RNY) and I'm really struggling today. The mere smell of a Slimfast shake makes me sick. I'm having crying spells and really regretting my decision. Is being an emotional mess normal? Does anyone have suggestions on how I can get these Slimfast shakes down? I actually liked the shakes when I was pre-op and can't understand the complete aversion.

Hi Terri, i am so sorry that you are having a hard time. I am preop 2/2/07 so i really dont have much to offer. I will tell you to go to the main forum and ask , these people are mostly postops and are a wealth of info and I am sure you will get the answers you are looking for. Hope this helped. Also your dr. is only a call away. Hang in there. Linda

Hi, I am pre-op myself but what the nutritionist said to me was to try a lot of different protein drinks. That something you liked before the surgery you may not like after. It does happen with surgery. I have friends that have had the RNY done and use Carnation Instant Breakfast. Also, from reading other post, people liked the drinks from www.smartforme.com. I am now trying different ones myself. Hope this helps. Clare

hi terri, i'm having my surgery in 9 days and i just called my friend who had her's a year ago. i'm not the type of person who buys stuff in advance because i heard that your tastebuds change dramaticially. so i don't want to stock up on....say....slim fast and then find that i HATE it. my friend says in the beginning she was lucky to get down what she got down...PERIOD. give it some time. at least a couple of weeks. just SIP, SIP, SIP. water especially in these early days. you don't want to get dehydrated. God bless!!!!

Terry, First of all, the crying spells and the regrets are VERY normal. They will pass. Post surgery depression is VERY normal. You should try Carnation Instant Breakfast. The smell of Slimfast made me sick from the first day I smelled it...years ago. I could never drink a Slimfast pre surgery. CIB seems to be much better. Also, don't worry so much about getting the whole thing down. Just take small sips of something. As long as you aren't getting dehydrated you will be fine. Soon you will start to feel better. Once the weight starts falling off, you will feel wonderful and have NO regrets. Everything you are experiencing is normal. Just hang in there. Let us know how you are doing. Leslie

Hey Terri, I am just about 6 weeks post op. As far as the drink try Carnation Instant Breakfast. I found the first week after surgery a struggle. I jus****ed a huge roast beef sandwich so bad I did not know what to do. But I stuck with it and I have no regrets now. I am down 61 pounds since surgery. It is a full time job the first few weeks to get a schedule together regarding eating and drinking. Just remember to Sip fluids all day long. Let me know if you need anything else. You made the right choice. Josh

Hi I had a difficult time with all protein drinks. I found that I could some what tolerate the glucerna strawberry protein shake mixed with milk and crushed ice. it was almost like a milk shake. I just sipped as much as I could during the liquid only stage. My surgeon also reccommended putting vicks vapor rub under my nose to help with the sickening smells of things. Things will get easier as time goes on. I am now 13 months post-op and do not regret a thing. In the early stages I thought to myself what did I do. Your body has just gone through major surgery and you can't eat anything but it will get better. Good Luck!

Thank you all for the kind words. My husband ran out and bought me every kind of protein drink he could find. I've tried the Isopure Alpine Punch and it wasn't too bad. And, I haven't cried in a few hours.... Thank you all!

Hi Terri, I am a pre-op so I don't have much to offer in the way of advice that hasn't been mentioned already. It sounds like you did the right thing and got some alternate protein drinks to try. Glad to hear your husband is supportive and helpful that must go a very long way. Hang in there...we are all here for you. Best wishes for feeling on the upswing in the coming days and weeks.
