Topic: RE: Lipedema / Lymphedema
Nan, I'm glad you are going to someone more experienced. I know for myself when I did the therapy it helped a great deal, however after the therapy they continued to swell and they got back up over a few weeks. That is finally what pushed me to have surgery, I could continue to deal with the swelling and the way it was coming back I just thought I'd try anything at this point to get some control. I'm glad I had the surgery, now my legs are much better. I can actually put them up and they stay down for the most part. I don't have to wrap as much, I haven't done much since losing infact, they stay managed with just the compression hose. Any questions just ask anytime. Amy

Topic: RE: Lipedema / Lymphedema
Hi Amy, Thanks for responding to my post. I have to tell you, finding and reading your lymphedema story on line helped me to recognize my problem and find a doctor who would actually listen to me and diagnose it! I'm just over 400 lbs. and 5'3", so there is quite a bit of weight to lose. I've been thinking about surgery for a couple of years, watched friends have success with it, but I haven't been able to make a decision yet. My lymphedema is not too bad - at least my skin is pretty good. I had one bout of cellulitis in the spring, not too bad, fortunately. I'm having a real difficult time with the treatment. I had 4 weeks of CDT with a therapist who unfortunately was not too experienced. I saw quite a difference im my lower legs, but only the lower half, since the bandages were constantly falling down due to the shape of my legs. I had a consultation with a more experienced therapist, and have devised a better wrapping method, which is not perfect. I have not been able to work on the thighs at all. I am waiting for a Circ-Aid legging to help get the lower leg further down, and to make things much easier. Of course, I can't bandage myself, so I am relying on my husband. It is putting stress on both of us, not the most fun thing to deal with as you know! I haven't been fitted for stockings yet, because there seems to be no point until I get the maximum amount of swelling reduction that I can. Well, this got long, and I have more questions for you, so I will save it for another email. Thanks again for responding. Nan

Nan, I have both Lipidema and Lymphedema and it's helped me a great deal since surgery. My legs are much more manageable. How much weight are you looking to lose and how severe is your lymphedema? Amy

Topic: Lipedema / Lymphedema
Hi, I was diagnosed with lipo-lymphedema about two months ago. From the very little written about lipidema, I am finding out that people with this condition who have weight loss surgery lose very little weight in their lower body. I'm considering surgery, as it would make dealing with the condition much easier. I am hesitant, however, to take such a big step if the results won't be that great for me. Does anyone here have lipedema in addition to the lymphedema? Any advice will be welcome, thanks. Nan

Hi Andi, It's very likely to continue to reoccur if you they aren't getting you the proper treatments and it sounds like this is the cause. Water pills are only going to help you so much, that isn't going to move the Lymph fluid out of the affected area like you need, other wise if the lymph fluid is not moved out bacteria will start all over again and the risk for infections are high. Please see if you can educate your doctor that you need some therapy on your legs to get the Lymph flowing properly so you can get the help you need. Amy

Hi Amy and everyone else on here. I am sorry that it has taken me so long to reply back. I was with the internet for awhile. I haven't had my surgery yet, but I am doing good and wondering if I should go through with the surgery or not now. I had gotten down to 580 pounds, but then I went back up to 610 after I stopped getting the wraps (my mom was doing them, but she isn't doing too good and she had to stop). I got some help though, and althrough I am not getting the wraps, I am losiing and it is staying off. I mentioned to a woman that I have Lymphedema and she proceded to tell me about something I had never heard of before that would help my Lymphedema and help me to lose weight and keep it off. She told me she was instructor for Nia and she has her black belt in it. The Nia Technique is a combination of Martial arts, Dance, and Yoga. She told me that one of the benefits of doing Nia is that it helped the lymph nodes to drain properly. I admit I was skeptical, but I decided that since it was exercise, it wouldn't hurt to try it, so I did. Whithin only the first week my legs were only half the size they were and they aren't swelling back up. I do Nia at home with a DVD I purchased for one hour each day. So far this year I have lost 90 pounds. My goal for this year was to lose 100 pounds, so I only have ten more pounds to lose and I will have reached my goal for the year. This is why I am wondering if I should go through with the surgery. The way I eat now and the Nia technique are both a way of life that focuses on the mind, body, spirit. It's working for me where every other thing I have ever tried failed. I have embraced a whole new lifestyle and I am loving it. My depression has gone away and I have so much more energy that I didn't have before. Six years ago I weighed 749 pounds. All together since then I have lost 229 pounds. I am only 45 pounds away from what I weighed when I was seventeen and after I get this next 45 pounds off I hope to be just as active as I was when I weighed that much. I wasn't stuck at home then and I was always on the go.

Hi i was recently diagonesed with celluits and lymphodema. My doctor never said anything about therapy or stockings. Iwas hospitalized three days for the celluitis when I went back to the doctorand he gave me water pills for the swelling in my leg the infection is going away but there is still some and tenderness htree weeks later. The swelling has gone down somewhat and I have lost 16 pounds but I am worried about reoccurence.

Topic: RE: Limphedema and WLS
Bobbie, Sounds like they mean Lymphedema and then you might be talking about Lipedema? Usually that's not going to matter with the blood clots, lymphedema is in the lymph system. It's a good idea to place the filter, that will end up helping in the long run to be safer. Amy
