Hi,

I agree with the other poster.  My surgeon is a general surgeon so he was very familiar with lympedema and has treated me for my celulitus recently.  As long as all your medical team are on board you should have no problems.

Amy Williams is the real expert on lymphedma.  Perhaps you can read some of the stuff that she has listed on this board.

Topic: Pannilectomy and Lymphedema

Hello,

About 3 weeks ago I went for my one year follow-up with my surgeon.  I planned on telling the surgeon what my plan was.  I wanted to lose another 50 lbs. (I had lost 200 to date) and then I want to go for my knee replacement.  Being as I still have 120 lbs to go to my high goal, I need to exercise and bone on bone knees just is too restrictive to what I can do.  Understand, I am 52 years old and I would love to have the body of a 20 year old, but I don't think Target sells them.

Well, the surgeon started by saying he wants me to go and have a panni, within the next 4 months.  Actually he wanted me to start the procedure immediately but I need to build up some time in work.  His plan and it has been his plan since I was 2 months post-op is too remove the excess belly and mons (sp?) to allow me to move better.  Let me mention that I suffer from lymphedmia in both my left leg and now in my pannis area.    So the hopes of this surgery is that the lymph circulation will improve, allowing me less break outs of cellulits and infections    He is also going to repair a small hernia at the top of the incision point.

I have to admit that I was taken back by this and would never have thought that I would be going for reconstructive surgery before my knee replacement.  This is my second panni, I had one several years prior to my GBS (I do some things backwards), so I know what to expect and I am not afraid.

The surgeon, I love this man, feels that if I went for the knees and got one of my infections, it might travel to the new knees and cause me to have them removed.  OK, that one knocked me off the chair.  He says this is a completely medical needed reconstruction and is 100% sure the insurance company will pay for this.

I go to see the PS in late October, back to see surgeon in November and hopefully, by the first week in January 2008, I will no longer be swinging in the wind.

Please send good thoughts my way.  I will keep all posted as the time approaches.

Just an update to let you know how things went.  My doctor helped me go through the whole appeal process and as soon as he got the answer, he came over to my house yesterday to let me know.  They turned me down again.  They said it is because I lost the weight on my own and didn't have the gastric bypass. I was supposed to have gastric bypass at UCSF.  After waiting over a year for them to get in touch with me about and unsuccessfully being able to get in touch with them, I figured they weren't going to be calling me and decided to get more serious about my weight loss, which resulted in me losing the weight without a gastric bypass.  Now I am being penalized for it.

The surgeon needs to be advised that you have Lymphedema also talk with the doctor that treated you for it. The three of you working together can find a solution to how to do surgery and continue your care for Lyphedema. Go into your appointment positive and armed with anything you can get for information from your Lyphemdema doc that will show your baratric surgeon you are taking this serious.

I'm new to this website & just starting search for surgeon , etc. Developed lymphedema this year due to cancer surgery. Lower legs & ankles are pretty bad. Did the doctor do the surgery anyway despite your lymphedema? Was anyone turned down? What sort of response did you get with first meetings? Any advice is appreciated. Thx.

Jenn, You might also ask your therapist about a reed sleeve.  I just got one two days ago and it helps so much to maintain them.  You can adjust the compression.  Not all insurances cover it.  I was lucky it covered 100%!  Yay! Remember you asked me about starting a LE support group.  I wish you could come to Georgia in October.  They are having a conference on Lymphedema and I noticed they are having some sessions about doing a support group for LE. http://www.lymphedemalighthouse.org/lymphedemaprogramoct3_7_ 2007

I'm so excited.  I had read about this on another lymphedema group, but didn't really look into it.  I went to my therapist the other day about my reed sleeve and she had some paperwork on it.  I looked it over and decided I'm going!   The meeting is October 5-7th in Atlanta! Here's more information: http://www.lymphedemalighthouse.org/lymphedemaprogramoct3_7_ 2007 Maybe I'll see some of you there!

Yesterday was the end of week one. There was changes already in most areas it was a change of .5cm but in other areas it was 2 cm. In fact the area where it was most swollen it was 2 cm changed. It was great news to me and my PT thinks I should be done with thereapy and ready to move into the compression stocking by the 29th of this month.

Tarra: Follow the advise that the other poster has given to you.  Having a panni will change your life.  You will continue to get infections, sores, fevers, etc. unless you have this taken care of.  In this case you have to fight, and keep fighting until someone listens.   Your PCP will probably be your best advocate.   BTW congratulations on your weight loss.  This quite an accomplishment.  You should be so proud of yourself. Good luck to you. Jeanne

Topic: second day of treatment and going nuts
I started therapy yesterday for my Lymphedema and so ready to take a bath, but I can't yet. So I guess I will go and take sponge bath and get my hubby to help me with my hair. My PT was very optimistic with just needing 4 weeks of the compression wraps and then I could move into a stocking. The hardest part is my insurance approved the assesment and one treatment only for now. She is going to show me how to do some things at home in case we need to have time for the insurance to approve for the extra visits.  Well I am going to head to the sink and try and clean the heat yuckies off of me.
