Thank you both for your responses. Where do you get the stockings? I have heard about them, but I didn't know if they were ok to use if I had not had treatment previously. I only have swelling in one leg, the left leg. It isn't extreme, it measures 30 in around. Large, but not as bad as many cases I have seen.

If I do get stockings, would I wear them on both legs if only one is swollen?

Hi. I strugled with this until it was diagnosed. I couldn't walk as my legs from above the knee downwards were so swollen and they felt hot like they were on fire. I couldnt get shoes on and most of my clothes didnt fit me.
I got the only safe water tablet on prescription given to me and was refered to the oedema clinic. ive had 3 visits and i was measured personaly on each leg all the way up in stages then customised stockings were ordered. i now have 3 pairs.
i would be in a right mess if i hadn't sorted it out through the dr.
i was laid up for three weeks with a herniated disc in my back and that meant the lymphatic system shut down. it needs movement as it doesnt have a pump like the heart so no movement meant stagnan****er building up n toxins trapped in my body.
so, as you see it's serious stuff.
I'm so releaved to have a solution. oh and no salt at all in foods. eeech it's bad for you anyways. lots of water . i have to drink 8 glasses but manage 3 pints or more when i can.
hope this helped

I also have lymphedema and had RNY 15 mo.s ago. My Dr. was very encouraging and his words have come true. He told me as the fat goes so will the fluid. My arms and legs now look like prunes and have shrunk considerably. I lay with my legs up after I have worked 12hr. shifts. You could have your legs measured and if they are small enough to wear stockings that will help. I had to go through the treatments for 5 mo.s and then the Dr. allowed me to get compression pantihose. I get them from MediUSA. They are pricey at $100.00 a pair but better than wrapping everyday. My last appt. the Dr. said I still have about 40# of fluid still in my legs so am working on more exercise to get it out. Good Luck!

Topic: Will my swelling go down after surgery?
Hey guys! I am 6 weeks out from my VSG surgery. While I have never been officially diagnosed with lymphedema, I suspect I have it. When I went to the nearest specialist (1.5 hrs away) she said she could do treatment but it would be 3 times a week for 6 weeks. Sadly, I couldn't leave work for that long every day and she has ridiculous hours.

Anyway, getting to my post... As I lose weight from surgery will my swelling go down? Its not too bad, but I can definitely tell the difference. Is there anything I can do, short of getting treatment, to help reduce swelling?

Make sure its durable enough to last you for years and that it is adjustable, mine can be sewn smaller (the seams are on the outside as not to irritate the skin).  The rep who set me up with my pump said he'd never seen anything like it for the price and durability.  I have 2 full length in black, 2 full length in beige, 2 full length in off white, 2 below the knee length in beige.  I also found compression stockings on drugstore.com for extending the length on the below the knee ones.  I had tried spanx and they were not durable.  Jobst brand was way too expensive.

Drugstore.com sells pantyhose style and knee high style.

Amerimark.com sells the knee high style a *****eaper than drugstore.com

Thanks so much for the advice, that's probably what I need some kind of compression garment. We have a medical supply store right down the street which should have something like that.
Hello I am looking for people who live in the Warren and Center Line area who are preparing for weight loss surgery or had the surgery. Possibly you are having it at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital on E. 10 Mile in Center Line or you had it there. I am preparing for surgery and even though I don't have my exact date as of yet I would like to keep in touch with others that are like me or was like me. Serious replies only please, maybe this summer we could form a walking group and just support each other through our journey of getting healthy.

Please contact me via email, if you are seriously interested in forming this group.

Thanks!

Thank you SOOO much for your response. I am going to copy/paste to my parent's e-mail account so she can read it for herself. I really wish she could get on line (other than dialup) to be involved in the world beyond her TV and weekly trips to the doctor. She is in such a small community, and off the beaten path to boot, that she sees and talks to very few people.

Thanks again. And, I am happy to be in onederland, too!!

I went for pumping and message therapy to a rehab center which did little to help me until I started wearing a compression garment sold by Lip-Xpress that I found at an OH Convention.  After wearing the garment for the first weekend I had dropped 9# of fluid.  After 7 months, 40#.  I still wear the garment religiously to control the swelling.  It also helped to sleep upside down in a recliner.  I don't sleep upside down anymore.  In the beginning though it seemed to make a big difference.  If you have swelling down as far as your feet, you will need a custom length garment.  Measure your inseam and order accordingly.

Topic: RE: My Mother's Lymphedema
I developed severe lympedema back in 1993 after a severe respiratory infection.  My legs blew up so badly that I could not wear shoes that touched my ankles.  I was wearing sandals in the middle of winter.  My weight escalated at this point to the 400's.  In 2006 I had reached a point where my mobility was so compromised that I either had to have WLS or be confined to a wheelchair.  In 2009 my weight had come down to 200.  I found a compression garment at an OH Convention being sold by Lipo-Xpress.  After wearing the garment faithfully for 6 mos. my legs started to deflate and I dropped 40 pounds of lymph fluid.  I still wear the garment faithfully to control the swelling.  I started off with 2 garments washing them each night to have a fresh one each day after showering.  As you know, cleanliness is completely necessary to avoid cellulitous.  I now own 8 garments so I only have to wash them once a week and still have a fresh one every day to wear.  If I had not had the surgery I would have never gotten to this point.  I never would have been able to wear the garments had I not lost over 200#.  So it was a combination of the surgery and the garments that have allowed me to be wearing a size 8 pant.  I too have a lypoma (on my back above my kidney).  My family physician says that lypomas are not anything to be concerned about unless they hurt.  If your mother can find a surgeon who will do WLS on her who has knowledge of the cancer then she should go for it.  It will improve the quality of her life.  If I had not had the surgery I would be dead or wishing I was.  Being over 50 and having a BMI in the 80's has got to be one of the worst depressions a person can have.

Topic: My Mother's Lymphedema
My mom had a double mastectomy last year and now has lymphedema in her left arm. She had, prior to discovering her stage 3 cancer, been recommended for WLS but she was afraid. She also has a couple of other stomach conditions that concern us (diverticulitis and a 'lypoma'?). I am still trying to encourage her to pursue WLS, esp now. She doesn't think she's worth it due to her age (68).

For those who had lymphedema prior to WLS does the weight loss really help?
She has had a terrible tim trying to get in for therapy (still isn't driving after her surgery), wraps don't fit right (her fingers turn blue WITH the specially made wraps).

Her internet access is very limited so I thought I'd see what I could find out for her. If the WLS seems to be a great help, I will continue to encourage her to look into it.
(I had mine 2 1/2 yrs ago and I love the way I feel - I want her to feel great as well).
Thanks!!
