Thanks good info to know. I thought maybe it was a reaction to eating more sugar than the first 2 years post surgery. (My lymphedema has returned to my right leg)

DID YOU KNOW? | |
Lymphedema is considered a "high-protein edema." These proteins collect in the tissues of the swollen area and can only be removed by lymphatic vessels. Decreasing dietary proteins will only make lymphedema worse so it is important to continue eating plenty of protein-rich foods. |

Hi Stacie,
Welcome to the losers bench. Those of us with BMI over 50 and other disorders have a much harder journey then some of our fellow "losers". I was 470 lbs. at the time of my surgery. I had been over 500# at one time and had decided that I would have a panni done, (like the surgery Ms. Kitty explained). I came home from that surgery 50 lbs less after one day. I was excited, but I still had really bad knees and quickly fell right back into old habits. Like many I never thought that i ate a lot, but in essence I did and not being a big mover I would continue to gain. I only had a block to walk from my car to my job and coming home at night I would cry my eyes out because I was in so much pain. I knew I had to do something. I also had frequent bouts of cellulitus but I wasn't seeing the right medical professional and also if the antibiotics made it go away in a few days I was happy. I can't tell you how lucky I am and also how strong my body must be. iIn 06 I had RNY and within 3 months I lost over 200 lbs. My honeymoon period was very short as i only lost another 70 lbs. I have had another panni along with some other tightenings.
I then started to gain again. All the weight loss still wasn't enough to make my walking any easier. My knees are bone on bone and nothing but new knees were going to help. In January of this year I have had my first knee replacement and will get the other one at the same time in 2013. I still have a long weight loss journey ahead of me, but I can't tell you how wonderful it is to be able to walk better. My other knee is still very painful and I am not 100% back yet, but I will be back on my journey.
I wanted to share a part of my journey with you. You are doing remarkable. Please keep up the good work. Also make sure that your medical people are watching your potasiuum (sp?) levels
I also wanted to invite you to come over to the PA board. It is a very active board. I know you live 2 hours away from where the majority of the members are, I am sure that you will enjoy the forum.
My best wishes to you on your journey, also on your wrappings. I admire that you are taking the step.
Jeanne

Hi Ms. Kitty,
I am so glad that the court stuff is over and that you found a new apartment. Once you are moved in and settlled you can start focusing back on you. My e-mail address is [email protected]. This way we can take our conversations off of this thread. I can't imagine not having heat at nights especially in Mass. I am in Philly and even though this has been a very mild winter it still gets cold at night. I hate putting the heater on as the bills are huge and being out of work for 7 weeks I want to keep my expenses down.
I wish you luck with the volumetrics diet. I never heard of it but I do know when you have WLS they tell you to drink a lo****er 30 minutes before you eat. I think they call i****er logging. I know that it sometimes works for me. Just be careful and make sure that you are eating as healthy as possible, not just for weight sake but also because you need to stay healthy and not have any infections looking for a place to sneek in.
I hope that you e-mail me as I really would like to know why you never pursued the WLS. I was 470 lbs. when I had mine. I also have had 3 other surgeries.
My main focus is to now get back to work and start to chart what I eat. I am going to do the pouch diet probably at the end of this week. The timer is ticking and I want to lose at least 70lbs before I get the left knee replaced. My left leg is the one that has the noticable lymphedma..
Good luck with your move and please drop me a line at the addie above.

Okay! That would be wonderful! I'm excited to be able to send them to you! Anything I can do to help.....
A little update on my situation. I may not be buying the Farrow Wraps after all! I discovered last night that I am able to wrap my leg myself with the long bandage! I don't get out of breath and it's almost just as if my therapist wrapped it! I'm going to go in to my appointment tomorrow with my leg already wrapped for her to see. I'm really hoping that she says I don't have to buy them. It will save me over $250!

Oh, clothes are always very much appreciated! I agree with you, that plus size clothes (at least the ones that are decent) are really hard to find. And yes I do need a coat. The one I've been wearing is kind of ratty and doesn't button down all the way. I will have to get a tape measurer for my legs. As soon as everything is going right with my moving to a new place and with the post office stuff, I will give you my mailing address. Thank you so much for this help! If there is anything I can do for you, too, just name it, ok? Thanks again.

Topic: RE: Lymphedema and knee replacement
Hi Ms Jean
My thighs are saggy but they don't come to my knees. I had a panni both before my WlS and after. I spoke to the ortho doc about getting the fat off of the area above my knees and he said I could probably do it. I still have a lot of weight to lose but I had started to put weight back on and realized that it was because I was in so much pain when I walked. Both of my knees were bone on bone. It is great that the one knee has no pain. I give you so much credit to wear the compression garments. I went for a one time treatment and I knew I could never do it. As long as the disorder stays in my one leg and I don't get any celulitus flairups I am happy. I was very fortunate that my RNY surgeon was familiar with lymphedema.
I wish you luck in finding a PS to do some lypho to allow you to get the knees done. Me personally I wouldn't settle for just one opinion, I would go to several PS. As a nurse you need your legs to walk.
Good luck to you Ms. Jean

Topic: RE: Lymphedema and knee replacement
May I ask, do your thighs hang over your knees and how long were you down? My thighs are very saggy and hang over my knees that is how I was diagnoised with lymphedema the Ortho Dr. said doing replacement maybe a problem with healing because of the skin overhang on the incisions. I went to a plastic surgeon to maybe get lypo and she told me what I had and that if she interrupted the lymphatic system anymore I may not ever be able to work due to increased swelling, being a nurse I was devistated. She sent me to the Lymphedema Institute in Houston where I was wrapped and compressed for 5 months. Now I wear compression pantihose. I had RNY 2 yr.s ago but now along with the saggy skin I have huge rope like veins all over my my thighs and calfs. Since the RNY and wt. loss my knees don't ache and I can walk for 12 hr.s without pain. I need double total knee replacements that I would also like to do this year. Thanks for sharing any of your experience.
Miss Jean
