Hello Dawn,  I'm sorry to hear that you are so scared about your diagnosis possibilities.  I hope that by now you've recieved a definitive one and are seeing a rheumatologist if any are possible.  I'm not very well versed on the topic of vasulitis (other than to know it's the inflamation of the blood vessles), but I have lupus and my husband and our roommate both have forms of rheumatoid arthritis. The exact cause of lupus is unknown, but some theories state that there is a genetic factor (if anyone in your family line has had any auto-immune diseases including arthritis, MS, diabetes, etc), as well as some sort of "trigger" which can include emotional stress, physical trauma or illness. Stress (physical and emotional) and future illnesses can make both diseases "Flare" or become more active. For example, I had mild symptoms of lupus from age 9, but when I had a severe case of chicken pox at age 12 it got worse.  The lupus then got even worse after I contracted mono in my early 20's thus leading to my diagnosis. Not all of the medications for rheumatoid arthritis, lupus or vasculitis cause weight gain, however prednisone, a steriod, taken in moderate and high doses can and does in most people. I'm sorry I didn't see this post earlier, but I hope that you are doing better. Toni

Topic: RE: lap band with Lupus

I had been diagnosed years ago with MCTD and fibromyalgia, as well as being told that I possibly have MS.  I had the lapband put in March or May of 2006.  I had NO significant loss of weight, which I am attributing to the fact that I had been on prednisone the entire time as well as perhaps the band not being tight enough.  I went off of the prednisone about 3 months ago (still, no real weight loss) and then had the band filled up entirely.  I am most DEFINITELY starting to lose weight (finally).  I would suggest that you check with your doc to make sure you won't need any type of steroid therapy (that he/she can tell) in the future so that you won't become frustrated over WLS that doesn't seem to be effective.  Also, make sure that your doc is willing to work with you regarding fills because it really seems more crucial when you have autoimmune issues.  Take care and good luck!

I too have lupus and have decided to seriously look into WLS.  I spoke to someone at The Kane Center here in IL and was told that LapBand was totally out due to me having lupus.  That being said my lupus is SO MILD it has only showed up in blood tests 3-4 times out of about 20 blood tests over the last 6 years.  I'm not on any medications for it and I feel fine except for the flares that are greatly diminishing in frequency.  I have no other health issues.  Here's the problem... I really wanted to have the LapBand b/c it's less invasive and is used for people who don't have an extrodinary amount of weight to lose - or so I hear.  However, since that is apparently not an option, I decided to look into GB.  I've now been told that I don't quite qualify for GB because I'm not overweight ENOUGH!  How frustrating!!!  If it wasn't for this lupus diagnosis 6 years ago, the LapBad wouldn't be an issue.  I wonder if there are any other options.   Thanks!
