Topic: RE: lap band with Lupus
I'm in the process of being diagnosed, and my dr. thinks it's Lupus.  I was banded 5 years ago.  What I'm realizing is that with disease (it's definitely auto-immune), my band gets tighter.  I assume it's during flare-ups, even small ones.  For example, flare-up in my hips means my band is tighter.  Flare up in the wrists, band is tighter.  It's really wierd. The problems it's causing are that it's much more difficult to eat.  It takes me forever to eat anything, and during the day I try to eat mainly raw foods (which are already difficult to eat w/out a tight band!).  I start the day with a 450-500 calorie deficit due to exercise, and right now I'm not losing any weight.  I believe it's because i"m not getting enough calories.  I suppose I'll make an appointment with my LB surgeon to discuss the effects of this disease on the band.  I may need to get some fluid taken out.

Topic: Hello fellow lupies!
Hi! My name is Jennifer and I am a 16 year survivor of lupus and just 2 months into my weight loss journey. I just wanted to meet a few of you and see how your life has changed followign wls.  I know I am flaring up now, but it could be because of the weather (I hate winter), the flu(which I have right now) or any other reason. Anyway, I am so happy to find other lupies who have had this surgery.  I am 48, married grandmother of nine. I have so much to live for and that is why I decided to have this surgery (VSG). I feel so much better overall, other than the flu and such, and I feel like I can do this successfully.  Hope to meet you all and share our stories! Jen

Topic: RE: Surgery with Ulcerative Colitis?
I suffer from UC and had the VSG done. It makes me llike a RNY since I still have the big D if I eat fatty things and such. Otherwise, not much has changed for me as far as UC is concerned. Everything is pretty much fine.

Topic: RE: Lupus & gastric bypass
Veronica, I have had lupus for over 16 years now and when I consulted with my surgeon he suggested the sleeve too, due to the fact that it was not as major as all the re-routing of intestines and such. He also said it was better for a lupus patient for the same reasons.  I had mine on Dec. 5th, 2007 and it was great! My surgeon did give me a bolus of steroids after the surgery to prevent a flare up and it sure did the trick! I feel much better now although this winter weather is rough, cold fronts and such, I am still having pain in my joints but the weight loss is helping with the overall pain I had before surgery. I have had my sleep apnea resolve itself since surgery, and my diabetes is under control too. My asthma is still there but hoping it will resolve as weight gets less. Feel free to ask me any questions....

Topic: RE: Another Auto-Immune something or other..
I thought this was an allergy board but upon creating an account I find it a weight loss board with strong recommendations of bariatric surgery. Anyhow, I just wanted to let you know I've been dealing with the same problems you're having for a year and a half now.  I have auto immune chronic urticaria with angioedema and dermatrographism. I'm currently being tested for a bacteria called H. Pylori, it's a bacteria that can cause chronic hives, barrets esophagus etc. If you take certain anti biotics and you feel as if your hives get better but they come back after discontinuing the anti biotic then you may want to get tested for that bacteria. I hear what you're saying. They don't have any answers. My next step, after all tests are run, is to send my info. to a naturopathic md. to build my immune system. I think the reason why you can't single out all the foods is that if you have auto immune hives that means that your system is not kicking out anti histamines. That part of the immune system has been damaged or for whatever reason is not working. So any foods or other things such as bees and bee products , heat, pressure, hot, cold etc. can cause hives as your ability to create anti histamines has been lessened to a great degree. Anyhow, not sure if mine is caused from fungal, viral or bacteria, Just wish I knew. If I find anything that works I'll post it up here for you. Good luck.
