Topic: RE: lap band with Lupus
I just went for a consultation with a surgeon yesterday. My doctor told me that he will not do the lap band on me due to my Lupus. Is there anyone who has been sucessful with this surgery who has Lupus. I was very dissapointed when he declined to do the surgery.
Topic: RE: Autoimmune disorders and Lap band
I just found this forum, so I am sorry to post so long after the fact.
I was scheduled for RNY 5/27/08, but I got test results back 5/14 showing that I might have Lupus (Double Stranded DNA test were very high). After informing my surgeon, he told me that he would not do a by-pass on someone with Lupus because he had a few clients that ended up with problems because of cutting the intestines.
I had a Lap-Band AP installed 5/30. I have had some problems with the band and with life- getting rear-ended 18 day post, getting an over fill, and getting sever food poisoning that required a total unfill. I also had an upper endoscopy done and found that I have Autoimmune Gastritis with multiple erosions. I did not know that it counter-indicated to have autoimmune diseases with the band. I had been working with the surgeon since Nov. 07 and he knew of my medical condions whi*****lude four other autoimmune diseases, that is why he orginaly planed to do the by-pass. I will most likely be having the band removed to allow the stomach to heal, but I am not sure of what then will happen.

Topic: RE: Vertical Sleeve or Lap-Band regrets
I would do the lap band. It is reversable and you are able to absorb nutrients. The RNY prevents you from absorbing B-12 and down the line you may have to take shots. Iron and Calcium are a big thing too. I remember when I looked into the surgery I was so engrossed in the weight loss part of it I didn't pay attention to this. I now have to do a B-12 shot every other week, take pescription strength Iron and take Calcium and Vitmain D. I would not reverse it but I wish I would have done the band because of the nutrients. Some people have had complications with the RNY and it is not reversable.
Topic: RE: Question for Lupus sufferers
I was just diagnosed with an auto immune disease that is similar to Lupus, it's called Myasthenia Gravis. Is she falling? difficult to lift arms or legs? double vision? slurred speech?
The doctors thought Lupus at first too but did several test and it wasn't. I don't have rashes either so maybe it's another auto immune disorder, there are many that we don't even know about until someone that we know or someone tells us about them.

Hi and cograts on your weight loss. I was diagnosed with lupus i*****
I did all work up for gastric bypass, and today surgeons office says it's too risky because I may have to take steroids in future. He wants to perform gastric sleeve, I am devaststed, don't want the sleeve procedure, might just walk away. Strange how the obesity will kill me before the lupus, but the lupus is the reason he won't perform procedure
Continued success!!

Topic: RE: I am wanting weight loss surgery
No I didn't have surgery yet. I am waiting to go to a class that is going to be held in August to start the process. I am nervous and unsure if I want to do it. Scared of the risks. Thanks for asking. I was having computer issues, sorry for the late response.

Dear MissVic59, I am new to this forum and I am considering having the WLS. I have my first consult in Sept. I wanted to know what type of surgery did you have? And can you please give me an update on how things are going for you. I was diagnosed 2 years ago. Anybody else please feel free to give feedback as well.
