Topic: RE: Lupus and recent RNY and protein in urine
I had a protein change that looked as if it was going to be glomerulonephritis -- it was a sudden spike.  Further tests were negative, though.

How are you feeling now?  And how did they treat the kidney probs?

Hi...Not sure if this will help, but I had "nephrotic range" protein levels in my urine 2 years ago...got sent to a nephrologist...had a biopsy and to everyone's surprise was diagnosed with membranous glomerulonephritis....which turns out to be associated with lupus and some other autoimmune disorders (I have had lupus for around 8 years)...I was concerned that I wouldn't be able to have RNY because of the kidney disease and lupus, but I did in Nov. 2009 and am doing great (well, only 1 flare since surgery)....I would think the protein is definitely a kidney issue, not a WLS related....the other thing is several blood pressure medications have a side affect of decreasing protein in the urine...I currently take Vasotec twice daily simply to control the protein levels in my urine and it has worked well so far...good luck

Hi-

I have SLE, and for that reason< I had to shop around for a surgeon, because I was being turned down at hospitals near where I lived.  One doctor told me he feared the trauma of the surgery would send me into what he called a "mega-flare" which would call for a bolus IV prednisone.  (I've had this type of flare before).

I have finally found a doctor who will do the surgery, and on February 25th, I will have a duodenal switch.

It is suspected that my grandmother had lupus, as my Mom would tell me stories about how she would just get sick and go to bed for a week, or even a month.  My Mom has rheumatoid arthritis which is also autoimmune.  I did read somewhere, maybe the Lupus Foundation, that children of RA patients have a higher risk of developing SLE.

HI there, Robin!

Lupus is not a barrier to WLS.  Though there have been no published studies of problems, doctors are recommending that patients not have lap-band, because it might be a potential trigger for autoimmune problems.

But NOTHING has been published to that effect.

Good luck on your journey!  Weight loss does a great deal to reduce various sources of inflammation that cause problems so you can expect great things.

Topic: Chronic Illness wls Support Group
What is Chronic Illness?
"A chronic illness is a condition that lasts a year or longer, limits activity, and may require ongoing care. More than 125 million Americans have at least one chronic condition, such as diabetes, cancer, glaucoma, heart disease, Fibromyalga, Multiple Sclerosis, and Lupus. Nearly half as many have more than one chronic condition."

Hello,
This group was specifically created for WLS candidates and post ops who like me face the unique challenges that living with a chronic illness may often present.  As individuals with a chronic illness, we face greater challenges that the typical mainstream weight loss surgery patient may not face.
Sometimes we feel left out of the loop as we read about others who are doing certain activities that we are no longer able to fully tolerate.

You may find the group by clicking on groups in your index. Once at groups, type in the word Chronic Illness in the search box and the correct group will appear.

Thank you for your interest,
Obesity Help Support Group Leader.

Hello Robin,

Great name my sister and daughter share Robin...

I too have Lupus SLE...my mom also has it...my daughter was born neo-natal lupus
...When I was pregnant with my daughter 7 years ago I went into severe t-cardia..which led
to my cardiomyopathy...(heart failure). I had defib/pacemaker implanted 5 years ago...It helped
some but...my weight was playing a major part of my declining health...last year my cardiologist
along with my internist recmmd...I have gastric bypass RNY...I'm 11 months out and doing well

140+ pounds lost a new me a new lease on life...no it doesn't cure your SLE (Lupus) but it
helps with the complications caused by Lupus...K.I.T

Hi Robin,
I have Lupus and had Lap Band Surgery Sept. 4, 2008....my doc would not due RNY because of the meds I am on...mainly the Cellcept.

I haven't had any problems from my lupus other than a flair because I was of prednisone for a month...

Good Luck!

Hello, I had the VSG on October 10, 08 in Monterrey, Mexico, where I have lived with my husband for almost 40 years as a Baptist missionary.  I was diagnosed with Lupus 6 years ago.  My surgeon is a world class surgeon...Dr. Robert Rumbaut. You can look him up online.  I have been on prednisone for 4 years, but at the time of surgery I was only taking 7.5 mg per day.  There is no reason not to have surgery in Mexico, if you trust your surgeon.  Most of the well known surgeons in Monterrey have studied in the States, and many of them, including Dr. Rumbaut, have actually TAUGHT the doctors in the US how to do it.

My advice is to be sure that you have a doctor in your area that you can contact after surgery if you need him.  (Dr. Rumbaut may have a list of doctors that he works with in the States.  Since I live here, there has not be a need to ask, but that would be an excellent question.)  I have had no problems whatsoever, other than a small flareup of gout due to extremely fast weight loss.

Mexico is a great country, and has excellent doctors and health care facilities.  Don't let others put it down.  Of course, as in any country, you can find the best of doctors...and the worst of doctors.  Just be sure who you are seeing...and go for it.

Contact me whenever you need to

Deb,

I had the RNY over 4 years ago and have Systemic Lupus.  It took me longer to heal from surgery but that's to be expected with the Lupus.  The gastric banding was not an option for me as with an auto immune disease the body attacks itself and could have rejected the band.  2 years after surgery my Lupus flared and I have been on daily prednisone for it.  I take prilosec, prevacid, or zantac with the prednisone and have not had problems.  But my stomach is larger than it was the first 2 years post op.

If I was you I would go to another RNY surgeon for their opinion. I am glad I had the RNY.
Best of luck,
Ginny
