I am 27 years old.  Had RNY Feb. 2009!  I feel great now.....Not tired, I workout at least 2 times a week....no bruising or petichae, no bleeding, Besides period), no fainting, no enlarged lymph nodes, no colds/infections.

I have to see a hematologist about my low platelets........omg!!! I am absolutely terrified at what they might find. Ehhh! ~
I can't even put it into words how worried and fearful I am right now!!!!!!  :(
If you want to text me, that'd be so great!  Could use somebody to take my mind off this stuff.

Topic: RE: I have SLE and nervous about which kind of procedure to have done
Hi All,
I also have Lupus and I am flaring right now, I think due to all of the stress I have been under arranging to make it to my out of town WLS conference.  I also am a collector of other conditions including asthma, fibromyalgia, U Colitis, etc.  I gained 80 of my lbs being on prednisone high dose for a year.  I have not ever been normally sized since I was on prednisone 9 years ago.
I am hoping to have the VSG also.  It seems the best option.  I will need to keep taking NSAIDS and would no longer be able to do that with the RNY.  My BMI bounces around 45-46, so the lap band seems to be a poor choice for me and I can only imagine the antibodies
I would make toward the band!!!

It would be great to keep in touch with other Lupus VSGers!
My first appointment is in 1 week and then I am hoping the surgery will follow shortly after. My insurance company seems okay with it unofficially.  The part that will be the hardest for me is really just gathering the multitude of medical records I will need for the first appointment.  I have never kept good records and have to call the 10 million or so doctors I have seen over the years and request transcripts.
I am going to go make some hot tea and try not to stress out and flare more!!:)
Nice to  Know You,
Renee

What surgery are you hoping to get?

From my understanding, the procedure has more to do with your BMI than not.  For me, everyone, nearly everyone on the boards said I'd be crazy to get a lapband.  The more I looked into it's complications, the more I realized how right they were.
I'm having the Vertical Gastric Sleeve in two weeks and am very excited about it.  My BMI is nearly 50, and through my research I heard this would be a good procedure for me to have.  With higher BMI's, the DS and Gastric Bypass would probably be a better option.
With Lupus, as you know, it's nearly impossible to tell how our bodies will react.  We can only do a ton of research and pray for a good outcome.  I would look more into the individual WLS's and see which one suits you best, first.
These boards are filled with information.  Keep asking your questions.  Don't give up.

Hello....

I just completed my classes on March 4th.   My appointment has been scheduled with the Surgeon on March 17th.  I will be asking lots of questions and keep you posted. I have SLE, Rheumotoid Arthritis, Osteo Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, and Sjogren's Syndrome.  I am hoping I can still get surgery.

I have it too.  I have a lot of other health issues though.  It is just kind of one of those diagnosis' that was heaped onto the dog pile...

Vickie and to all others with Lupus,
I was diagnosed with Lupus and Sjogrens Disease in January 2009.  My pain level was awful, I had no energy and suffered from fatigue daily.  I decided to have the wls (RNY) in October 2009.  I had not heard about the sleeve, the only options I had heard about was the lap band and the RNY.  I'm not a patient person and wanted drastic weight loss quickly, so I went with the RNY.

Since the surgery, I have dropped 61.5 lbs.  While my body is relieved of carrying the extra weight, I have had some issues over the past two months and am not sure if it is linked with the wls.  In January I developed headaches every day for a month, I am a long time sufferer of migraines, however not that frequently.  After the headaches stopped, neck pain set in.  Then a week later dizziness, disorientation, confusion, and SEVERE fatigue.  I would come home after work (Secretarial type work) and fall asleep on the couch by 6pm and sleep until my husband woke me to go to bed, then I would sleep all night.  This has gone on for two weeks now.  This is soooo not me.

My husband took me to the ER, quickly they diagnosed me with an inner ear infection and said I had fluid in both ears.  Funny I didn't feel any ear pain or sinus pressure.  They told me to stay home 3 days, and to take antibiotics.  On the 2nd day home, I started vomitting and having diahrea and on the 3rd day my husband found me on the bathroom floor where I had fainted after vomitting.  Again, another trip to the ER, this time there was no fluid in the ear, never though there was to begin with.  However this ER doctor was much more diligent.  After several hours and tests that night, I was admitted into the hospital.  They found my blood pressure to be low, and drop even lower when I would stand up, possibly causing the dizziness.  They also found that my liver enzymes were elevated, and my stomach lining to be irriated.  The GI doctor (not my wl surgeon) did a biopsy and will receive the results in about a week.  After 7 days in hospital, they have no clue as to what was making me so ill.  I am still weak, still sleeping way too much.  I googled "elevated liver enzymes" and found that there is an auto-immune liver disease...could this be caused from the lupus???  DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY ANSWERS???   PLEASE... I am missing way too much work and have had to file an FMLA to protect my job.

I just wanted to add that I have Lupus and other syndromes that accompany it, and I want to have WLS, but not sure which direction to go despite a lot of research.  I found your post very helpful to me, personally.
Thank you.
