Topic: RE: Day three after VSG surgery and I'm doing GREAT
I was diagnosed in 1995 myself. I had every single textbook indication and my doc was brand new MD and no freaking clue what I had. The dermatologist diagnosed me within seconds of seeing me. Of course, then I read up on it and smacked my forehead and said OF COURSE!
I'm continuing to do really well with my weight loss and feeling good in general. Getting in all my vitamins, liquids (most of the time) and I've been able to eat real food again. When one small meatball is a meal or you measure out 1 ounce of tuna fish and you can't eat it all ... well, I never thought I'd see that day for sure!!!
for any of you other Lupus Patients out there - do your research, check with your docs, and go for it.

Whoa! I had no idea you also had Lupus! I have had that diagnosis for about 15 years or so. I just wanted to say hello!

so I was a tad bit worried that my lupus may cause problems with surgery but alas, none! My Rheumatologist had me redo one of my test prior as it was running higher than normal but it had dropped a few points by the next week so he OKed me for surgery.
In my preop blood work my PCP found I'm low on D and K so I'm taking them now.
My surgery was a breeze, no pain, hardly any gas, I only gained 2 lbs from surgery and I'm not having trouble getting in my liquids. I almost think they did not do surgery but for the holes and staples in my belly. LOL
I'm walking and just doing really well. since I'm on 7 mg of prednisone daily, they gave me an extra shot of it during my anesthesia bliss (by the way which I woke up from with wide open eyes and a smile).
I can't wait to see what the future holds for me.

Renee, Have you not learned that tacos and candy bars are NOT wise food choices? If sugar and grease make you ill, just do the obvious! Quit eating it!! And you need counciling from your bariatric support groups, social worker or psychologist. You may have lost wt but you are still making bad food choices. It is hard, I know but bariatric surgery is only a tool. Eating poorly is still sruck in your brain!! Good luck, Marjorie

Still doing well. I'm now down to taking the Paquenil once a day every day. I'm now down 66 pounds and continue to have no joint pain from the Lupus -- BUT about the time of my last post, I was able to start back into the warm water therapy at the Y, and that has been a Godsend in keeping me mobile and flexible.
It's very seldom that I have to take anything for pain, but the Ultracet is in the cabinet -- just in case. I also added back the Glucosamine when I "graduated" from chewables/liquid meds post op to pills -- about 3 weeks' out. So far, so good. I can't wait to see my rheumatologist at my checkup the end of May and see what the bloodwork shows -- I hope it turns out to be as good as I feel.

It hasn't happened. I take Plaquenil once a day 3 days a week and twice a day on the 4 days that I do my cardio workout or water aerobics. Haven't yet had to touch the Ultracets post op.
While my experience may not be "normal", it has been a godsend to have this kind of pain relief already with just a 15 pound post op weight loss.
Big ole congrats to you!!! I decided on the Sleeve just in case. I take my 7 mg of prednisone daily, my 2 Plaquenil daily, and my other things as needed but I did not want to take a chance on anything after the surgery etiher.
Glad you are doing so well. Do you have any updates siince your last post?

YEA FOR YOU!!! I'm on my 4th day of liquid pre op and have surgery on May 7! Saw my Rheumatologist last Friday and he said my labs looked ok but redid my double stranded anti DNA. It always runs high - about 20 and was 40 last week. Has been up to 125 with no flare so when it went down to 30's he said he is OK with letting me have the surgery.
Surgeon explained about the extra prednisone shock before they do the procedure and reminded me of slower healing time. I'd like to add you to my friends list to keep an eye on you and help me thru too. OK??

What made you decide on VSG? I have lupus & Sjogren's and recently diagnosed with diabetes. The RNY seems to be the best choice for me but I am afraid of the esophagus problems and gastroparesis (slow stomach emptying) with Sjorgren's and dumping syndrome (which I have often) with diabetes. Both the VSG and the DS have been recommended but neither are covered on insurance.
