Topic: Going to have surgery
Hi everyone,
I want to have the lap band surgery.. I have lupus, fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, sleep apenia, and other health problems.... Can any of you give me any ideas as to whether I should have the surgery? have any of you had major problems after the surgery?
I think (hope) the surgery would help to imprve my health overall.
Thanks for any & all input!!!

Topic: RE: Lupus meds and RNY
Had RnY almost 2 years ago. I have SLE. Was off prednisone a couple years before surgery. I'm certain it contributed to my weight gain.
Anyway, I'm on Plaquenil and Methotrexate. I had some snyvisc shots in the knee and took Vicodin for pain. I'm now just dealing w/ the pain (not very well some days).
The weight off the joints has helped so much. No CPAP machine.
Fewer flares BUT...... surgery will NOT cure Lupus. My place of employment seems to think I should be all cured and never sick now. It's still so very frustrating to have SLE and flares. Still have to pace myself for energy. Good days and bad days. Don't overdo it. Give yourself extra time to heal from surgery as well. Took me a long time.

Topic: RE: lupus patients who have had gastric bypass
Not sure what info you're looking for. I have SLE, had RnY almost 2 years ago.
I do dump on certain foods I shouldn't be eating and some that shouldn't bother me but do. Everyone is different so foods will affect us all differently.
I have lots of gas issues. I think most of us will. It was our digestive system that's been mutilated after all. Check w/ your doctor to see if you're able to take anything for the gas. I'm sure there's something you're allowed.

Blood Clotting - TRY Vitamin K!!! Serious - look it up. I am shocked no one told you to add vitamins to your daily regime.

Topic: RE: B12 Deficiency, Pernicious Anemia
Pernicious Anemia isn't JUST from Gastric Bypass, I have been living with it for over a year, and I am a carrier of Hemochromotosis (high iron in the blood - my red blood count is elevated), and I also have Thyroid Disease (Hypo).
Dealing with Pernicious Anemia is a no brainer - really, don't sweat it. My having elevated levels of iron actually cause an absorption issue with my Levothyroxin (for the thyroid). I take sublingual B12 daily, and I have to administer shots once to twice a month, depending on levels in my blood checked every three months.
For me, getting Gastric Bypass should actually lower my iron levels to a normal level (I found four case studies), and already knowing I have Pernicious Anemia, I should have little issue dealing with supplements. Knowledge is power.
Another issue folks might miss is not having enough vitamin K in their blood (I used to get bloody noses when I was pregnant, my body's way to relieve the excess blood production). I was told back then to eat a lot of parsley - no kidding! Anyhow, I am very good about taking multi viatamins, additional D, B, Calcium as well as other supplements - and I am pre-operative.
Bloodwork is fascinating business! Do some research, remember: Knowledge is Power!

Topic: Losing weight with Wegener's Granulomatosis on pred and chemo
It's been 6 months since my lap band surgery and I'm happy to report that things are going well. My vasculitis is a bit more severe than lupus, but our meds are usually the same. I am losing while on prednisone and methotrexate. WOOOOHOOO!!!
I gained over 150 pounds when put on high doses of prednisone and unable to get out of bed for months due to pain and other complications. My type II diabetes is doing much better, I still have joint pain, but not as bad as before and I have more energy. I still have very bad weggie days, but the weight loss has been good.
I could not have malabsorption wls due to my meds, so lap band was my only choice. So far so good.
Just sharing in case this helps anyone...
