Topic: RE: I have SLE and nervous about which kind of procedure to have done
I am in the very same boat! I am new to the board and am also trying to decide what procedure to have!

I was diagnosed with Mixed Connective Tissue Disease and Psoriatic Arthritis 6 yrs ago and do fairly well. I only take Plaquenil and baby ASA and occas. Mobic, and I've never had to take Prednisone. At the surgical consult yesterday (where I was all set to discuss Lap Band) the surgeon brought up gastric sleeve as an option becasue of meds. That wasn't even a thought before my consult, so now I have to research that surgery!

I'm nervous about the VSG procedure because of the removal of the portion of stomach, but also as a nurse, realize that the risks of erosion with Lap-Band and NSAID use.

What are some suggestions for those of you that have lupus and have had, or researched, the Lap-Band and VSG? My BMI is 36-37, so I'm not even considering bypass!

I just went to my 1st weight loss seminar and I have decided the band may not be for me,..,. I am probably going with the sleeve, I have my cardiologist approval, my rheumies approval, my pcp's approval... looks like it may be going to happen soon, I sure hope so I will know more over the next few weeks.

Thanks for all the replies and sorry it took me so long to reply.

Hi Tammy.  I agree with everyone that you should discuss with all of your docs to make sure they are all at agreement for you having surgery.  I would research all your options.  I have Lupus and had the Duodenal Switch.  I have heard that the Lap band is not the right choice for lupus patients.  However, the right surgeon makes all the difference when making your choice.  I am still a newbie.  I had my surgery on July 8th.  There is no proof that I know of that wls helps with lu*****mptoms, but it cannot hurt.  Good Luck!

Topic: ALL MIXED UP LUPUS AND RNY HELP!!
Hi, to  all my fellow sisters and brothers who find themselves on this roller coaster of life after surgery. My background is that I started as a 5' 21/2" 235 lb 34 y/o woman, who was pretty healthy I did not have diabetes, high blood pressure heart problems or cholesterol problems, but I had hypothyroid, fibromyagia and lupus. This combination of pain and meds and thyroid made it hard to lose and keep off weight.  So I with a gaggle of doctors, decided that gastric by pass would be my best option to keep me from gaining additional weight and avoiding the health risks that come with it. Well I have done well lost 125lbs  down to 110lbs, had lower body lift and got new breasts. Things were going great labs were great, then BAM! my bone density scan showed osteoporosis, PTH doubled the norm, and lost 1/2". And finally after a year of mega D, ZINC< MAG,CALC,PHOSP,IRON, A,C,E, B COMPLEX, my next scan was worse they finally approved me for RECLAST infusion, because of my age its only been approved for postmeno women over 55, and we can not take bone meds orally because of absorption problems.  That brings me to my current problem, the diet for Lupus treatment calls for low protein, sulfa containing vegetables and opposite of that for a high protein diet that bypass patients are to be on, they suggest soy but soy inceases xenoestogens and mess with the thyroid, this was not an issue till about 6 moths ago when the pain has increased and food makes me sick, and of course Tylenol just doesn't cut it, I am taking melxocam which no one can agree on, but it helps.  I need a rhumotlogist, nutritionist, endocrinologist and weight loss specialist that can agree on what is right for me, has anyone had this problem? please help

Hi all, just reading your information re. Lupus, Just diagnosed in July, but I was actually having symptoms for years and thought some of my symptoms was caused by my weight. When I continued to have symptoms even though my weight was much lower I began questioning my doctors. After several test and along with my history. A Rheumatologist gave me the news, I agree with Elli seek the advice of your docs before making a decision, but for me I feel I made the best decision of having the RNY. Take care and I wish you the best.

Since you have lupus and fibro, I would suspect you have a good rheumatologist in your corner.  If you don't, you must have some awesome PCP.  I would first and foremost, have a discussion with the rheumatologist.  If he/she is onboard with you having weight loss surgery, then you are good to go.

Second, you may want to reconsider the lap-band as your surgery of choice.  You have autoimmune disease and you would be putting a foreign body in your body.  Not the wisest choice.  While I never wanted the lap band, I did some reading on it, and the manufacturer's literature specifically stated not to get a lap band if you had a history or family history of autoimmune disease.  That said, the first surgeon I consulted with was more than willing to do a lap band on me as an "off-label" usage.  Also, there are many people on these boards with lupus and other autoimmune diseases who have had the lap band and had no issues what-so-ever.  Again, it's something to discuss with the doctors...first the rheumie, and then a surgeon.  You might be better off with the sleeve or RNY.  If you go for RNY, you won't be able to take NSAIDS or steroids.  Disclaimer on that statement, I was told for a short period of time with the use of proton-pump inhibitors, it would be okay.  The sleeve doesn't restrict your drugs.  I would also recommend staying away from the DS surgery.  There is a higher risk of kidney issues and you are already at risk for kidney issues due to the lupus (if you don't have kidney issues already).  Speaking of kidney, if a nephrologist is already part of your medical team, you would want to consult him/her about the surgery as well.  Actually, I would recommend consulting any specialist who is involved with your autoimmune issues about surgery.

I had RNY in May 2009.  Before surgery, I lost 70 pounds.  Since surgery I've lost 130-140-ish (I'm sort of stuck at the moment...and I would partially blame that on my lupus).  Best thing I could have done for myself.  Lately, I'm having issues with pain and fatigue...otherwise, I go to the gym religiously 5x/week, eat small portions, high protein, low carb, low fat, low calories, etc, etc, etc

I'm sure there is more I'm missing that I should mention, but I'm exhausted and not thinking well.  If you have questions, feel free to ask.
-Elli
