Autoimmune disorders and Lap band
Hi, I just happened to look at this forum as I have recently been diagnosised with an autoimmune disease. I am on my second Lapband and due to my autoimmune disease diagnosis my surgeon wants to remove the band and convert me to gastric bypass. Because many autoimmune diseases impact to the movement of the esophogus, a lap band also can impact the same movement of the esophogus. It appears that with autoimmune disease and a lapband you significantly increase the probablity that you will permanently damage your esophogus.
Among those whom I like or admire, I can find no common denominator, but among those whom I love, I can; all of them make me laugh.
HI there ET!
Actually, the answer to this is -- It Depends.
With Lupus, for instance, there are no published studies indicating any problem with the LapBand. And there are problems taking anti-inflammatories for some people who have RNY. So many doctors will prefer LapBand for patients who have Lupus.
On the other hand, since there is a potential for autoimmune aggravation with foreign bodies, and since antiinflammatories can be taken when patients use them with (for instance) Prevacid ... many doctors will actually prefer RNY.
So the answer is ... it depends.
In your case, your AID inhibits esophageal function, so LapBand is not the way to go anymore! But it depends on the autoimmune disease that presents.
I just found this forum, so I am sorry to post so long after the fact.
I was scheduled for RNY 5/27/08, but I got test results back 5/14 showing that I might have Lupus (Double Stranded DNA test were very high). After informing my surgeon, he told me that he would not do a by-pass on someone with Lupus because he had a few clients that ended up with problems because of cutting the intestines.
I had a Lap-Band AP installed 5/30. I have had some problems with the band and with life- getting rear-ended 18 day post, getting an over fill, and getting sever food poisoning that required a total unfill. I also had an upper endoscopy done and found that I have Autoimmune Gastritis with multiple erosions. I did not know that it counter-indicated to have autoimmune diseases with the band. I had been working with the surgeon since Nov. 07 and he knew of my medical condions whi*****lude four other autoimmune diseases, that is why he orginaly planed to do the by-pass. I will most likely be having the band removed to allow the stomach to heal, but I am not sure of what then will happen.
