Topic: RE: What should I be feeling after 5 months and 4 fills?

I felt that way for six years until I finally had it removed and revised to a DS, two years ago.  I never found my "sweet spot" and the same as you are describing, sometimes I could eat a lot and other times a few bites of chicken left me feeling stuffed with a Charlie horse like cramp in my chest. I know it works well for some people, but it just never did for me and quite honestly, after 6 years I felt hopeless. When I had it removed I weighed 325 pounds at 5'2", today I am 134!!! I hope you are able yo figure it out...best wishes

Topic: Band slip

So.. I've had my band for 4 years this month, I lost 120lbs and have kept most of it off. Ive never had a fill.Never had any band complications until now. Suddenly I was having insane pain eating, the food would go down but when it would begin to digest I would be in pain. My surgeon is 8 hour drive away from me, and only covered me for 2 years and my family doctor doesn't have any knowledge surrounding the lap band. So I put myself on a liquid diet and went to the ER, they took a x ray and the doctor said it looks like my band has shifted and to stay on Protein shakes etc, so she referred me to a gastroentrologist but now they're telling me it's a 6 week wait just to get a endoscopy.. 6 weeks just to have it looked at is just absolutely insane to me.. I'm assuming I'll need surgery to have it fixed or removed!? Wondering if anyone else has been in this situation and what their experience was like and what the heck to eat when you have a slipped band?
Thanks in advance :)

Hello my lapband was placed in 2007. It took awhile for me to get restriction and to feel full on smaller amounts of food. If you can still eat larger portions and tough meats without your food getting stuck or feeling full I would say you do not have enough fluid in your band yet. My surgeon would ask me to wait 3 to 4 weeks between fills so it took awhile to get there. I also had a smaller band. When I was filled properly I could not eat bread, tough meat, or dry meat. My food would get stuck if I didn't chew my food up really well. Due to complications I'm working on getting a revision to RNY. Tell your surgeon what types of food you are still able to eat. He may just being cautious so you don't have to get an unfill. I hope this helps, good luck!

I had a band in for 10+ years and had it out due to complications and revised to RNY 7 weeks ago.

Restriction with the band does take a while. I remember having several fills before I felt any. If you are over restricted you can't eat anything but slider foods or you get stuck constantly. The feeling isn't anything like what you used to feel like when you are full. It's more of a tightness in your neck or chest. If you eat too much it will come right back up. The other issue is, with the band it's not constant. Sometimes you are tight and can barely eat and other times you can eat as much as you want. At least that's how it always was for me. I'd call and make an appointment with your surgeon. Good luck.

Hi Karol,

I did not have the band but see if your surgeon offers regular support group meetings. Hopefully you can reach out to those that had the band.

Good luck to you!

Topic: What should I be feeling after 5 months and 4 fills?

I was banded in June 2016 and have 5.1 cc in a 10.0 cc band.  What exactly should it be feeling like by now?  I honestly don't feel much different than I did before.  I can literally eat as much as I used to.  The odd time I get a the feeling like I had a turkey dinner after a small portion, but that's rare.  The nurse at the clinic told me that I'd have to learn to start controlling my eating.  What?!  I understand that I still need to control the type of food I put in my mouth, but I thought the band would help in the quantity of food.  I told them that I didn't feel like I had any real "restriction" yet, and they told me that that is not what the band is intended to do.  What?!

So can anyone please tell me what I should be expecting to feel?

I was helicoptered to have life saving surgery after taking nsaids. They are burned through my pouch and burned into my intestines from TAKING NSAIDS.  AFTER SURGERY. EVER. I ALMOST DIED. NO, NO, NO Nsaids. It's not worth it. I'm researching alternatives for my chronic pain, migraines and ruptured disk in my back. They give me opioids but that can lead to addiction. There has to be something better. Just don't be dumb NSAIDS are killers for those of us who had wait loss surgery

Hello

I am a fellow bander and was banded 7+ years ago.  I have lost 190+ lbs.  The band has truly changed my life.  If I did most of the work and my band was just there for support or if it truly was the tool I needed it to be (I can never make up my mind).  I feel that I did so much of the work.  I still "dieted" and still felt hungry.  I went into this thinking that those things would something I would not have to deal with anymore.  But regardless, the surgery got me to change habits in my life that were killing me.  Forced me to get off my butt and exercise.  Why...well I thought...you just went through surgery to lose weight.  Now stop sitting around and start doing something!!!.

So it was shear willpower and determination that made me want this band to work....LOL.  I worked out 6 days a week.  Stuck to a 800-1000 calorie diet for two years.  I lost the weight.  Now was that the band or me.  Maybe...both???

The band helps me maintain.  I am able to able to maintain my loss.  I have urges to eat things I shouldn't but I don't most of the time.  The band definitely helps me from over eating.  For instance when we go out to dinner and everyone is gorging on the breadsticks or appetizers.  I don't.  Why...because then I won't have any room for dinner.  Do you know how many calories I save right there???  LOL.

In the end I would not change the fact I have a band.  So far it has helped me.

Hi there,

I was banded on 12/16/2009 and lost 120 lbs.  I have re-gained 10lbs and am satisfied and comfortable with the slight weightgain.

I also used to return to the Lapband Forum frequently the first few years but, like you, I read some very strong negative opinions about the Band.

I don't have any major concerns with my band and I'm 100% pleased with it.  But I am a little worried that if I start to have trouble, eg, slippage, a leak, erosion, what would I do?  Clearly, the band has fallen out of favor with the doctors.  I think part of the problem with the negativity surrounding the band is that most people struggle to lose weight with it and with the other types of newer surgeries introduced, folks can lose more weight, faster than with the band.

I also like the idea that the band can be removed and I will still be "whole".  I'm leery of cutting out part of my stomach or re-routing things!  And, I like your logic about after 8 years with the band, a leak isn't the worst thing that could happen.  And hurrah for you that your insurance will pay for a new one.  That's a huge concern that I have if I ever need any sort of bariatric surgery.  And, like you, I would consider being re-banded.  I just don't know what I would do if I was ever told that I should consider a different type of surgery.

You said in your post that you're scheduled for any day now to be unbanded and re-banded, so if you have decided to proceed, I wish you all the luck in the world.  I think you're making a good decision based on what has worked successfully for you.

Please let me know what your final decision is/was?  I am always curious to hear from a fellow Lapband-er who still has the band and is doing well.

Good Luck!

North West New Jersey.
