Topic: RE: To Lap-band or Sleeve??

I have not been on this forum in a very long time but logged on today and saw your post.

I had the same dilemma you have. I desperately needed was but could not have bypass due to pre existing bone disease. I wanted VSG but was terrified of doing something so permanent and then found out that at that time my insurance would not pay for it.

Lin May of 2010 I got a Lap Band and let me tell you, it saved my life. All medical issues disappeared and I lost all my excess weight. I loved that thing, followed the rules, etc. I never could tolerate much fill in mine but that was ok by me. I was so grateful for my tool and was a super strong proponent. At the time there were a few on here who had problems, but not many.

Forward to April 2012, I started getting stuck very easily so my medical team and I decided to do a complete infill to let things heal. They did not. Even with no fill I got stuck easily and belched even from water. When I went back to my surgeon after a UGI he told me it had to come out. I was devastated.

I had had my band removed in Aug. 2012. A perfectly positioned ban vita no visible flaws except that I had to live on ice cream to get anything in. Oh how I mourned my band. I wouldn't even tell anyone here I had been forced to revise for about 6 weeks.

What am I trying to say? My beloved band had been trying to kill me. Shortly after my revision more and more people had to revise. My surgeon said there were so many that he wished he had never gotten involved with them. As it turns out, everything the manufacturers told us was lies. We fell for it hook line and sinker. I only am left with the belching problem and feel I got off lightly. Would I recommend one to anyone? No. It is too likely to have to be removed and if it does damage it might not be so easy to live with.

I have done well with my sleeve, it wasn't as invasive as I feared, and feel it is easy to live with. What ever surgery you choose, good luck.

I love this! I've been using vinegar to clean my house so I've always had some on hand. This is extremely helpful.

However, I did want to share my personal story with a fungal issue that affected the skin under my breasts and around my groin. I thought it was from excessive sweating and perhaps a chronic yeast infection (which can also happen under the breasts), but after 6+ months of using a fungal + hydrocortisone prescription with very limited relief or changes I got a referral to a gynecologist. I wish I had gone sooner!

Turns out I have a rather uncommon skin condition called lichen sclerosus. It can happen to anyone, is not an STD, yet can become quite serious and very painful if left untreated. The more I read about the condition the more it freaked me the hell out. But I was prescribed a steroid ointment to use 2x a day for a month and then 1x per week thereafter for prevention for the rest of my life. Relief was nearly instantaneous.

The scariest thing about lichen sclerosus is that it weakens the skin and can cause discoloration too. Over time (left untreated) it can cause scarring due to the delicate, thin nature of the tissue. Some women (and men) have reported fusing of the skin in areas where they have this skin condition (which can be on the genital area too). Ouch! But the treatment is very simple, very available and it was covered by the Ontario gov't plan (basic health care). I live in the Greater Toronto area of Ontario.

I have provided a link to the page on lichen sclerosus which has information on symptoms and such. One may or may not notice symptoms. Your primary doctor may not be familiar with this skin condition, nor be able to recognize it. I would definitely see a gynecologist for diagnosis.

Warm Regards,
Shannon

Topic: Thiamin Deficiency (B1) on my blood tests

I just had my blood work done last week for my 11 year lapband check up. All the blood work was excellent except for Thiamin (B1). In doing some research on it, I discovered that the deficiency was the reason why I was having eye problems (blurry vision and muscle pains). Had been to the opthamologist in October and now I have another appt. 1/9).

I am 75 and am walking at least 3-4 miles daily. Has anyone else experienced this?

Thank you for any comments. Marti Peters

Topic: RE: Considering LAP-Band surgery

I had a Lap band over 10 years ago, at first it was wonderful, I lost weight I felt good, then I started throwing upall my meats, suppliments stayed down, I went to a new dr for maintainance of the band fills, stopped losing weight and now I'm a preop for a VSG my new surgeon won't put in lap bands because one third of banders get revisions IMHO save the time and aggravation if you can get the more drastic surgery go for it

Think about it. If the lap-band were a great option, MORE surgeons would be doing it now, but that is not the case. A friend of mine cannot even find a surgeon to take care of her fills.

Don't do it.

Wow, are there surgeons still willing to install and maintain Lap Bands? Don't waste your time!

If your husband and you have too many fears, try another wellness program like WW. The truth is, if YOU made up your mind, your husband will need to follow. And you have to make the decision weighing all possible consequences.

All best to you.

Boy, I remember big city MDs who came to sell us local yokels on it in a free seminar 16 years ago. There is high obesity here, and their eyes were swimming in gov. subsidized insurance fees I guess. they were very blasé' on: a too tight band that left you drooling unable to swallow , or getting a vitamin stuck, just blew off these 'rare' issues. What really scared me was being in a rural area, remote, any emergency adjustment required someone -a specialist- to do it in a hospital. we have quakes, power out for days often in winter, road closure, all I could think of was serious complications or dying because of a plastic belt on my stomach. I brought that up, about being remote, and they had the nerve to say "oh you'd have bigger problems in a quake"

In any case I heard a joke by doctors the other day: the most popular lap band procedure is 'removal' I think this one example proves why long term studies are required for medical procedures.

I just join FB groups to learn what real people's experience is, very helpful.

People who have the BALLOON are always griping on gas, burping and discomfort all the time, the food sits on top the balloon, carbonated soda is a bother, etc. for ~15 lb weight loss, it seems a lot to tolerate for 6 months of having it.--all this is MHO of course. YMMV
