Topic: RE: lap band removal scheduled for next Wed 4/15/15

I struggled with the decision for a very long time myself.  My Dr wants me to wait 3 months but it will more than likely be 4 to 5 months  because I have to go through all the preop requirements which I have already started plus he said I had some scar tissue that he cut out and he wants me to be completely healed.  Some Dr's  will do revision at the same time as your removal but most want you to wait.  The band does some permanent disfigurement of your stomach So waiting seems to be the best decision for me....I'm excited though and I feel so much better mentally and physically now that the band is out

I'm very anti band but I would say if it ain't broke don't fix it! If it is working for you the way it is just leave it alone. You might want to get a fluro to check and make sure it is where it is supposed to be and no visible issues. Otherwise the more you fill and unfill the more problems you are going to have. You may just be one of the lucky ones. Usually you have some pain and or reflux with a slip but not always, hence the suggestion for a fluro but myself I wouldn't do any more than that. As for the port it should NEVER be completely removed but there is a lower profile port than what they used back in the early 2000's. You must have some way to easily remove fluid in an emergency situation so don't have it completely removed just swap for a newer one.

It hasn't happened to me but if it had slipped, I think you would know it! Basically th band doesn't move, the tissue of the stomach comes up through the band so making it very tight. So if you are eating without problems then IMO you have no slip! And if you are controlling your eating without problem, then you have no dilation above the band.

i used to go for an annual barium swallow but my doc said that there really is n need unless I feel I have issues. And I haven't needed a fill for 7 1/2 years, so I haven't seen him for ages. I did see the nurse a couple of years ago because I felt I wanted a tiny bit of saline out (mild night time reflux).

Highest 290, Banded - 248   Lowest 139 (too thin!). Comfort zone 155-165.

Happily banded since May 2006.  Regain of 28lbs 2013-14.  ALL GONE!

But some has returned! Up to 175, argh! Off we go again,

So, I probably should have gone for a check up BUT, I never really needed to. Im one of those people who don't go to the doctor unless something hurts. anyway, after reading about all the slippage etc on this blog Im thinking maybe I should have. Ive been banded since 2002 and never needed a fill. I eat well, exercise and I am currently at the weight I want to be at. The band still dos the job, but Im wondering if its possible that it has slipped....I only came to this site because I am interested in getting my port removed because I dont like the way that it looks. It protrudes out of my belly that I am thinner. What does it feel like when the band slips.?

Glad removal went well.  Did your doctor tell you how long you had to wait before revising to the sleeve?

I've been back and forth with this decision for 1 1/2 years.  I have been banded a long time, lost a lot, gained it all back and am refocusing on trying to work with the band but I struggle with food getting stuck and that feeling of it sitting in my throat.  I am losing so much slower this time when I'm working so much harder.  It's discouraging.  Not sure if the sleeve will help me.  My doc said if he revised it would be better to wait a few months after removal but could chance doing it all in one.

Topic: RE: Need advice.. Lap Band versus RNY

I had a band done 6-7 years ago and it was the worst experience of my life. I would chew until I couldn't chew anymore and would still throw up daily. I was compliant but the throwing up was not preventable for me. Eventually from throwing up constantly the band moved and caused a complete obstruction. I went to the hospital, they put a NG tube down, and prepped me for emergency surgery. Prior to surgery the Doctor asked if I would like him to re-position it and I said HELL NO, please get this THING out of me. I've known or heard about several cases that were similar to mine. I would not recommend this surgery. The surgical group I work with now does not recommend the lap-band and use it very infrequently. There is a few that have had success, but from what I see most have issues. Good luck with whichever option you choose. I hope you can appeal and get the RNY. I'm hoping for the VSG. I think they consider the VSG a little less invasive and with less complications/malabsorption. Have you looked into it?

Definitely take the pain medication if you need it. You've had major surgery. I think when they tout the band as "less invasive" sometimes people think it means that it's not going to hurt as much. But it's truly a lot your body just went through.

With the pain meds comes the risk of constipation, so make sure you drink plenty of water and maybe consider taking a stool softener. You don't want to add the pain of constipation to the recuperation process.

Feel better. Rest up and heal well.
