I'm not one to mince words...GET RID OF YOUR DAMN BAND !
on 5/19/15 9:01 pm - Califreakinfornia , CA
Thank you so much for everyone's response well to update everyone I went to doctor again Monday and she added 0.7 cc so I am at 9.2 cc in a 14 cc band. In the two weeks I lost 6 ibs and in one day I lost 3.5 ibs and I think that must have been water weight or something. So thank you for all the encouragement i am truly blessed and I am going to continue learning
I also agree that at not even a year out, I wouldn't consider your lap band a failure. I think you need to work with a therapist and really change your eating, and this can be done. Maybe the lap band will still work for you.
I also lost only 35 lbs with the lap band, and that was 11 years ago. I think it's very important to really reflect on why the lap band failed. Mine is for two reasons: 1) My initial weight loss momentum was thrown off by health issues and 2) I need the hormonal and metabolic changes from a different surgery.
I was the perfect post op patient - walked a lot, stuck to the post op diet perfectly, etc. But then I had a series of random health issues that caused me to have to withdraw from my last semester of law school, and was also just a lot to deal with, and that momentum got derailed.
A number of times in the 10 years since then I've had periods where I did great with diet and exercise, but my body just holds onto the weight. Every damn pound is a fight, and if I'm eating great but go just one day off plan for a birthday or whatever, even if I don't go nuts with eating, I gain weight. I get frustrated by how freaking hard it is just to lose one pound, and then give up. This is why I think the RNY is a better choice for me, and my surgeon agrees.
Being at your sweet spot doesn't help with boredom or stress eating. I've been at my sweet spot for probably 8 years, and eating around the band is noooo problem at all.
I suggest going to therapy to figure out why the band isn't working for you. If the problem is just boredom and stress eating, then this is head work and no weight loss surgery is going to fix this. I'm not a big fan of the band with what we know now as far as failure rates and long term complications, so considering a revision to a different surgery at some point isn't a bad idea. BUT, you have to get yourself to where you know you can stick to a strict eating plan. For me, if I see the pounds coming off, I'd stick to just about any eating plan that was working. However, if your problem is comfort eating, then you have to get that under control first, or you will sabotage any weight loss surgery.
I've had a lap band for 11 years, and in three months I'm revising to RNY. I haven't had any lap band issues - the placement is still good, restriction still good, etc, but I just didn't lose nearly enough weight.
With new information showing the long term rate of re-operation, combined with the fact that only about 50% of people have successful weight loss with it, I'm not a big fan of the band. For anyone considering WLS, I encourage them to consider the sleeve or RNY.
I know that having your stomach cut up is scary as hell. That's why I went with the band (although the sleeve wasn't around or at least offered near me when I was banded). However, the complications with the sleeve seem to be so low that it makes it a much better option than the band. Yes, there is a slightly higher initial risk, but the band is much worse long term with the chance for slippage, erosion, port flipping, etc.
In your shoes, I'd read a LOT about the sleeve, including success rates and chances of complications vs. the lap band. I personally think the sleeve makes a lot more sense than the band, given what we know now about long term band complications. However, if after doing your research, you absolutely, positively are not okay with the sleeve, then I would get re-banded. While the band has it's limitations, it's certainly better than nothing and better than being overweight. I'm still morbidly obese with the band, but I know I'd weigh a heck of a lot more without it.
The only reason I'm going with RNY instead of the sleeve is because I am prediabetic with a very strong family history of diabetes, and the intestinal rerouting of RNY helps with insulin levels. I'd much prefer the sleeve since it's really a low risk surgery and has much more success than the lap band.

I feel for you, I had a time when my band tightened up and I had a hard time. I had my doc un fill it for about 9 months. I had a 20 pound gain but when I refilled it did not take near as much for the band to help me. It has been 4-5 years and my band still is not even close o what I had in there at that time. Good luck hope you get in soon and get your issue resolved
Lapband - Jan 2009 weight goal reached with lapband. Revised to VSG- 1/25/16
I would try to get in sooner if at all possible, did you tell them you are too tight maybe you should do that and see if you can get in any sooner or get on a cancellation list. I no longer have a band because it got tight even after it was emptied all the way. Scar tissue continues to build up between the band and the stomach even with no saline in the band and eventually it gets too tight even without saline.
I have permanent damage to my stomach from the band and have something called gastroparesis where my stomach empties too slow so the food backs up and won't pass thru into the intestines. I take a daily stool softener to help some but it is really painful. So the sooner you can get some saline out the better off you will be.
I should have gotten my band removed much sooner than I did and now i can't even revise because of other health issues so del with it now while you can!! Good luck to you!
