Topic: RE: Lap Band problems

I had my band since 2003 and was just revised in Feb to the bypass.  I had no issues for several years and did pretty well.  Then I started having port pain, which then led to heartburn/reflux and just feeling like crap.  Come to find out even though my band was ok it became encased in scar tissue which led down the tubing to the port.  When I had the band out it took my surgeon over an hour to chisel it out.

My band was completely empty for 2 years, yet due to the scare tissue I had restriction.  One day I could eat protein forward meals and the next day I was lucky to get down water.  I did end up make bad choices just because slider food would go down and stay there.  I was also popping tums like tic tac.  I could eat two bottles a week and that was on top of a PPI.

Just be prepared incase your band has to come out.

I'm sorry to hear that you're feeling yucky. I think it's smart that you're seeing your surgeon so he or she can help you find out what's happening. Maybe it will be a simple "fix"... the swelling around the port might be an infection or maybe just irritation. Hopefully that can be remedied.

The nausea and pain could be from gastritis and there are medications that can help.

I hope you feel better soon.

Thank you for answering my questions. I have been experiencing persistent cough, nausea, pain and swelling around port.  I made an appointment to see a WLS surgeon, hopefully he can figure this out.  I am tired of feeling yucky. Thanks again for the information.

I can't help but think our not losing weight must be linked to having it removed.  I'm considering the HCG program, but I'm researching it more before I make the decision.  They claim you lose 1-2 lbs/day but you only eat 500-800 calories.

Reflux, trouble swallowing, referred left shoulder pain, trouble eating solid foods and sometimes even liquids. Esophageal dilation, nausea, vomiting, pneumonia, and chronic coughing.

Are you having any symptoms that lead you to think you are having band problems? Sometimes a person can have an episode or two of something and it doesn't necessarily mean that the band needs to be removed. And sometimes you may have no symptoms and then it comes on very suddenly that you might need band removal due to excessive scar tissue build up (or other complications.)

Good luck to you.

I would like to know what some of the symptoms could be if a lap band is going bad.

oh i am so sorry to hear the removal was hard on you! I only have good things to say about my surgeon. same one who put it in took it out and i feel so much better. I'm using my fitness pal right now for my medical supervised diet. i know me though i will need to have another surgery. I will work out hard and watch what i'm eating but if I don't see results i have a hard time keeping it up! im frustrated right now because on my fitness pal i am under the calories every day and yet not loosing much. my scale is off from the dr's office about 6 lbs so i figure i have lost about 2 lbs in the last month and thats including my surgery where i didnt eat anything for 2 days and very little for the next week.

i am learning that low calories is not what i need to loose. i need to change everything i am eating!

I had my 10 yr old lapband removed in August 2015.  I had it put in in TX, and removed in KY.  I joined a gym, hired a trainer, and work out 8 times a week, burning over 1000 calories per workout.  I use my fitness pal to log my calories which average 1400/day.  I haven't lost 1 lb.  it has to be because of the removal surgery, but I'm not giving up.

Having any bariatrics surgery is a mistake.  Just do it the right way with diet and exercise.  This removal was a nightmare, I feel like the KY Dr. just butchered me, the scars are horrible, and I just wish I had never had it put in.

i go to a gym where the owner lost 480 lbs, (yes you read that right, he was over 700 lbs!). They teach us to eat whole foods, nothing processed, and their "beast mode" class burns over 1200 calories.  I plan to keep working out and eating whole, healthy foods. I'm confident the weight will come off.

I agree with the others my band caused horrible stomach and esophageal damage to me. I still have a slow emptying stomach and always will which causes terrible gas and pains in my stomach. Feels like the band is still there yet was removed over a year ago. I've lost 30% of my swallowing ability which makes taking pills more difficult. My voice is much more raspy than it was, sounds like I have a cold all the time. If i were you I would get it removed as soon as possible because as I found out it only continues to get worse! Good luck to you!
