I do have pain periodically starting in the center of my abdomen radiating out to the left. It can take my breath away at times. I will hear tomorrow what steps my surgeon wants yo to next, and how soon.  Thanks for the info.

If your band is eroded then it needs to come out NOW so it can start healing. Usually when it is eroded there is a certain amount of inflammation and often infection so that has to have time to recover and heal. You can't operate on a stomach with a hole in it or you will end up with stomach acid spilling into your body and that is a bad deal.It also depends on how much damage the band has done to your stomach and other organs, it can also cause great damage to the inside of your stomach too so it depends entirely on how much has been done to your poor stomach but do push to get it out ASAP the longer it is in there the more damage it is doing! Best of luck to you!

Hi Sonja, I'm so sorry to hear this. I wish you the best with your revision. You might be able to find more info on the Revisions forum. There's a good chance that you'll have to have the band out and then wait for the bypass until you're healed. Are you experiencing any pain from the erosion currently?

Best of luck to you. I hope all goes well.

Scheduled to have revision from band to bypass in November, and just found out my band has eroded into my stomach.  May need to have it out and allow for healing before the bypass can be done.  Has anyone been through this or have tips/suggestions?

Thanks!

Sonja

Thank you for your support Hislady...you are right I use to be a bit overzealous about the band...remember I had a Lap Band complication too...and had to replace it with the newer band, because the older bands were known for causing complications....but I've always supported those who had complications, my frustration was with band bashing and the destruction of the Lap Band Forum.

It use to be a place where we could share our accomplishments, frustrations with the band and complications...but it turned into a hate forum and anybody that did like their band no longer posted to this forum...creating a ghost town on this once heavily active board.

I know that some people had legitimate complications...it's well documented the dangers of a too tight band and the symptoms...but yet people use to ignore the signs until it's too late....

The Lap Band is not for everyone...in fact I do not personally recommend it...it's requires the most discipline of all the surgeries...my surgeon explained this to me over 10 years ago...that's why I hit the ground running when I got my band placed.. if I wanted to lose any weight....if you don't diet and exercise along with the band you won't lose one pound...many surgeons did not inform and educate patients at the time the band was most popular...they did not inform their patients on how the lap band was suppose to work by diet and exercise...they know that if they told the patient upfront how the band REALLY worked they would lose sales.

Instead many doctors just tightened up the band so tight until the patient could barely eat...and sadly this is how many lost their weight if they were disciplined enough to drink protein drinks as there main source of food ...and some did not lose much weight with this approach because many patients resorted to junk and soft foods ....but these methods produced complications... avoidable complications....I am just very sad that so many people lost their bands this way.... and I use to warn them but I got bashed for warning...

On a lighter note ... I did not require an unfill through out my stroke ordeal because I was properly restricted and my Lap Band stayed intact...and I ever have to get my band removed for any reason I will never bash the band ...Again I thank you for supporting me.

I feel bad for all of you, I had my band removed over a year ago and am still suffering from the permanent damage it has done to my stomach and I only lost 20 lbs with it. I have since lost all my weight from the damage it did to me because I can hardly eat anymore and the weight I lost was all muscle so it left me very weak.

The band has been a huge disappointment for many of us and is no longer being done by many surgeons, even the Mayo Clinic has stopped using them so that tells you what a failure it is for the vast majority of us. It has a 60% failure rate so we aren't the reason for failure but the band itself is a poor product and many of us who got them 8-10 yrs ago were lied to by the manufacturer. We were promised it would do things it couldn't do for us. So don't feel bad at all.

Many folks have gone on to revise to other surgeries, I would say the majority revise to the vertical sleeve gastrectomy, VSG and have been very successful. I would suggest you read up on the other surgical options the RNY and the DS, duodenal switch. Look at your eating habits and see which surgery would fit your eating problem and get the surgery best suited for you. Altho none of the surgeries will help if you eat lots of carbs. If you eat mostly carbs you will fail at any of the surgeries so you have to be willing to make a lifetime adjustment to your eating habits but if you are willing to do that any one of them can be a huge help to success. I wish you all the best!

Had my band removed on June 2 and have gained 20 lbs, fractured my foot 3 days later have not been able to exercise, just got back to exercise and need to loose feel terrible.  They are not doing the lasp band anymore here so the only option I have is the bypass.  I lost 100 lbs and had the band for 10 years.

I had to have my lap band removed due to complications. I am glad I had that option, and am now looking at other options to re-lose the weight. I just came on to give you encouragement, and let you know that you aren't alone in lap band complications. Good luck to you.
