Lap Band on 07/27/14
Topic: RE: Banded for 8 1/2 years and looking for friendly support

Good afternoon-

I am new to the site. I was so glad to read your post. My husband and I are both banded. We have been struggling as well. We are glad we made the choice to get it. You're so correct about being disciplined about what we eat and drink. We have totally fell off track. What have you started doing to get back on track? Also congrats on your marathons! One thing we all have to remember is one person's opinion should not reflect on our feelings. Here's the thing about the lap band. This is my opinion of course. The lap band didn't tell us to put those bad foods and drinks in our mouths. We did that on our own. So we can't blame the lap band on us gaining weight. It is there to help us to be obedient to our bad habits of eating and drinking. My husband and I went through True Results for our lap band. And we had a wonderful experience. And continue to have a great experience! But we live in Austin, Tx. So I can't speak for other True Result sites. Our surgeon and the staff and the nutritionist are wonderful!

Are there any certain recipes that you can recommend? I have some if you'd like them? Also do you live near me? Maybe we can workout together? I hope nothing I have said offends you. I am just tired of all the negativity of the band. I agree its not for everyone, but don't be so dang negative and scare people!

HAVE A HAPPY EASTER

Sincerely;

Kandice :-)

Topic: RE: GERD many years after band

Hi Heather,

I was also banded in 2003, but had to have mine removed in emergency surgery. I did develop severe reflux while banded (as well as many other serious complications.) It wasn't the sole reason for band removal, but reflux, especially so severe that you cannot sleep without being propped up, is a good reason to have the band out, most definitely. The damage being done to your esophagus by the acid is reason for concern.

Best of luck with your barium swallow. I hope you get some answers and can make a plan for the future. Wishing you the best.

Doctor Fielding is in the minority when it comes to recommending the band. Many practices are only removing bands at this point.

It's simply not a good device, long term or short term. It sure makes a lot of money for some people, however, so I can understand why they'd want to keep people in the dark.

Topic: GERD many years after band

i was banded in 2003, lost all my weight, then gained it back over the last few years due to a medication I'm taking that causes massive weight gain.

last three years I've developed severe reflux ... At night I choke on it and need to spit up in a cup. I'm propped up, taking Prilosec and band isn't filled. I have a barium swallow next week. Anyone been through this? Did you have to have the band taken out?

Obviously the entire article is not to your liking, but what specifically, do you disagree with?

Topic: RE: What is the prognosis?

Get a complete unfill now! No excuses, this could be life threatening. That is what was happening to me and my surgeon told me it HAD to come out. At the time I loved my band but he told me that after the unfill didn't help, that when your tool is harming you it is no longer your friend.  Call your surgeons office tomorrow. When you go in you tell them every little bit. Yes, they will order a UGI but that is only one source of information. Mine didn't show anything, but when the unfill, after about six weeks, didn't improve anything it was revision. Your tool is killing you and I can almost guarantee you are resorting to sliders to cope, causing weight gain.

You might also want to check into the sleeve another form of surgery. The band is the worst at everything!

Thanks.  I did get it removed.  I am 2 weeks post op.  I have scheduled for a revision in June.  Excited for the new chapter.  I did tell my kids.  They were very supportive of it.  I still have days were I feel like I could of done more but I quickly dismiss those thoughts and move on.  NO more looking back at what ifs and whys.  Gearing up for the next step.  Thanks again
