Removal of severely eroded lap band
Hi, I posted this on the revision board but no one replied. My lap band has eroded quite severely and part of it is actually in my stomach. It is now in a vertical position rather than horizontal. Kind of hard to describe, but suffice it to say that it is nowhere near where it should be. I am scheduled to have it removed on August 1st and am kind of concerned. I can't a lot of info on recovery times for an erosion like this. Does anyone have any experience with this?? The surgeon I met with has never removed one like this and actually referred me to his partner who will be doing the actual procedure. I don't have an appointment with the partner until two days before surgery. Ugh.
You band is so badly eroded into your stomach that it isn't where it is supposed to be and they are making you wait until nearly 3 weeks to remove it?!!! Are you serious?! You need to find a real surgfeon and get it out now before it does anymore damage. You could lose your stomach all together if they keep screwing around. An eroded band means immediate removal so infection doesn't set in or even worse that your stomach contents and acid doesn't leak into the surrounding tissue. I would be in their office first thing Mon, morning or go to the ER and get it removed tonite! That's crazy!! Recovery time is the least of your worries and the longer you wait the worse it will get.
I agree with Hisaldy. An erosion as severe as you describe is a medical emergency. You may have had no replies simply because this is an unknown quantity, others on here have had bands erode into tissue but yours sounds particularly bad.
My very best wishes.
Highest 290, Banded - 248 Lowest 139 (too thin!). Comfort zone 155-165.
Happily banded since May 2006. Regain of 28lbs 2013-14. ALL GONE!
But some has returned! Up to 175, argh! Off we go again,
Well, I've actually had three different bariatric surgeons look at the test results and they all agree that is is not an emergency, as I show no signs of infection and my pain level is tolerable. The surgeon who will be doing the procedure is supposed to have the most experience at complex issues like this, so I feel okay about that part of it, although I was totally freaked out when I first found out. I'm really hoping the recovery will not be too horrid, but I guess we will see . . . I'll let everyone know how it goes. Thanks for taking the time to reply.
