A Slip, a leak, and it's unbuckled

I was banded about 3 years ago this month. In that time I lost weight, had a baby (I only gained 10 pounds during my pregnancy), then lost some more weight. I have recently discovered that my band has not only slipped, but I also have a leak and it appears that my band itself has come unbuckled. I have about 50 pounds to go and need this band out. Have any one you had a revision with less than 50 pounds to go? My new surgeon ( we are military and have moved 3 times since I was banded) is suggesting the sleeve.

I have had my band for two years.  Last week I felt some thing had changed,  I don't feel full so quickly and food seems to go down quicker and further down than before, my band feels much more comfortable, which I don't consider a good sign.  Surely if my band had slipped or flipped I would be in pain.. Has any one felt any of these symptoms?

My my band slipped I had severe reflux, the acid was horrible. I felt that I had great restriction and was losing so well , even though I had the leak.

The slip is the reason you had reflux and had the restriction. Since there was too much stomach above the band, the leak was not manifesting as a loss of restriction. If you did not have a slip you would not have felt restriction.  Good luck!

No actually some ppl never have pain when they encounter band problems. As mentioned a Slip can/Does cause reflux as well as other problems.

A "sudden" loss of restriction "can" be a sign of band erosion.
I'll attach a link for band complications.

I hope this helps.

Thank you very much for sending me the link, after searching the web for hours, this is just what I was looking for.

Three things could have happened. 1st. It could have loosened up after having lost some weight. 2nd the tubing/band could be leaking.  It could result from a needle stick in the wrong place to just wear and tear. Everytime you breath, that abdominal muscle flexes the tubing. I have seen it happen many times. It's usually a port leak and a port replacement is a simple procedure that does not require the entire band be changed. 3rd. A band erosion can cause that feeling of loss of restriction.

What I would first do if you were my patient to is check the fluid amount and see if it was what I expect it to be. If it's all there, I would give you an adjustment. This is provided that there is no sign of skin or port infection.  If you have a high volume of fluid in your band and you don't feel restriction, then I would order an endoscopy.  Fluoroscopy is not the best diagnostic test for erosion.

Goodluck! Please let is know what your doctor thinks.

It may well just be you need a fill. Slips generally make you much tighter not looser. Leaks, of course, make the band feel loose but a small fill would either solve the problem or indicate a leak if it did not solve the problem.

Highest 290, Banded - 248   Lowest 139 (too thin!). Comfort zone 155-165.

Happily banded since May 2006.  Regain of 28lbs 2013-14.  ALL GONE!

But some has returned! Up to 175, argh! Off we go again,

If your band is unbuckled and they are going to have to fix that, I'd take your surgeon's advise and revise to the sleeve.  You get the restriction without the nutritional mal-absorption.  I had the band and had it removed for medical issues.  I now have the sleeve.  It is so much easier than the band was.  No fills and unfills.  I don't have the pain from the port and the best part, I was able to lose another 50 pounds more with the sleeve than my lowest with the band.  I was just hoping to get back to my band low and if lucky another 10 pounds.  So very happy with this surgery.

That said like with all WLS you have to work it and do your part.

There is a Band 2 Sleeve group here and also a failed band group you might want to join and check out.

Good luck.

BAND REMOVED 9-4-12-fought insurance to get sleeve and won! Sleeved 1/22/13! Five years out and trying to get that last 15 pounds back off.
