My first cold since getting banded

OMG...I am so sick.  I don't know what's going on.  I know the excess mucus is filling my pouch, but I did not expect to feel like this.  I am so nauseated.  I have to sleep sitting up in a recliner because any liquid in my pouch that is just sitting there trying to fight through the mucus to drain comes back up.  I have totally given up on solids.  Liquids are struggle enough.  I feel so full so quickly from the liquids that I've only taken in 20-30 ounces each day for the past 2 days.  I haven't peed in about 18 hours.  I am so weak.  Feel lightheaded whenever I get up to walk around.  How do I get past this?!  So sick of being sick!!!  :(

Do you have any fill in your band? You may need a partial unfill for awhile. What concerns me even more tho is that you say you haven't peed in so long. If it has truely been that long I think you should call your on call doc (nearly every doc has one on weekends) because that means your kidneys aren't getting enough fluid to work and that can be bad news. Like kidney stones forming or just not flushing things thru like they should. If it doesn't improve I wouldn't hesitate to go to the ER and get IV fluids, getting dehydrated is very dangerous too. Maybe try ice chips to get more fluid in.

I have very little in my band.  I'm not sure how much it was primed with, but I had 1 cc put in my band post surgery.  And I've had to have .5 cc taken out because I was too tight.  My unfill was 3 weeks ago, and things were going good, I was feeling much better compared to before.  But then this cold hit.  The first few days didn't seem to affect me.  But a good 3-4 days or so into it, I felt like I hit a brick wall, and I just haven't been able to come back from this downward spiral.  I finally peed a couple hours ago, but it seriously had been since midnight last night that I last went.  I'm really trying to push fluids today.  I'm not worried about solids.  That's really the least of my concerns.  But even while conscientiously trying to push fluids, I've only had 30-35 ounces today.  I can't drink a lot at one time.  It makes me feel sick.  So I've been trying to constantly sip.  I just don't seem to be getting anywhere, though.  I'm starting to have diarrhea, and that concerns me as well.  Because I know that will give me a quick ticket to dehydration.

You need to seek medical advice asap.  You may need an IV to get rehydrated if you are going with out fluid to the point of not peeing.  Than you may need to get an unfill until they get thru this.

I agree with the others. Get medical advice. Hope things get better soon.

There is a nasty virus going around that produces an extraordinary amount of mucus.  My daughter had it and the doctor told her to take mucinex and sudafed to clear it out.  She got a secondary infection but once she started on the mucinex she began to improve.  See your doctor and maybe try out the mucus reducer.

Thanks, everyone.  I finally went to urgent care today.  It was pointless, unfortunately.  They refused to give me an IV.  Gave me two cups of water to drink even after I explained I couldn't drink 2 cups of water.  (They looked at me like I was talking gibberish when I mentioned having lapband.)  I told them I had only peed twice in 36 hours.  They told me if I started going 24 hours without peeing, then I should come back.  They told me to drink, drink, drink (like I didn't know that, I would if I could!), take sudafed, and sent me on my way.  Guess I'll call my surgeon tomorrow and see what he has to say.

I'm so sorry you ran into idiots at the urgent care. I swear it baffles me how some people get into the medical profession! Hopefully the sudafed will help dry you up some until you can get ahold of your surgeon . Do call him tomorrow and hopefully he can give you even a tiny unfill to help out while you are sick and fluids if you need them.

Ugh - sad excuse for medical advice! Did you get some proper care from your surgeon or PCP? Feeling any better? Keep at it, kiddo. Best wishes for a much-needed speedy recovery.
