O.O Serious reflux can cause cancer when it is uncontrollable. It can cause erosion and scar tissue. I lost all my molars and have esophageal damage. I was also blessed with corkscrew esophageal spasms. Talk about painful as hell.  I lost my singing voice and my voice changed, became scratchy and low. I did everything right...my band was not to tight...I had scar tissue under my band.

My spasms stopped once I had the DS and my reflux is not easily controlled with medications. Nothing...NOTHING helped before the band was removed. It was a miserable life with the band. I was a veteran, too. 8 years with that POS in me.

Nooo!  You are wrong!  You see, if on the slight chance you have band problems because of not going to a good surgeon and not getting aftercare then allllllll you have to do is remove the band and it is all good again!  That is the beauty of the band, remove it and everything is fixed!  It's God's gift to our population and it's so perfect and safe!

Just like Vitameatavegamin~  It's tasty, too!

From my research and talking to several surgeons, many surgeons moved away from the band because  they found aftercare to be annoying and they did not like time it required for filling the band.

From what I hear the band is now being revamped and the new manufacturer will only be selling bands to lap band surgeons, not switch and bait surgeons who only do Bypass and other surgeries. From my research the band failed because too many surgeons were not focused on aftercare, they were only focused on filling band too tight, with little to no aftercare of how the band really worked.

I am actually happy to hear that the band will only be offered by certain surgeons that will give the patients the best aftercare for great long term success.

They have 4 types of weight loss surgeries for a reason, so it is insulting for ppl tobe against any surgery, it's not one size fit all, if your Bypass fits you, that's great everyone is just not willing to deal with a life time of vitamin regimen for life, I only want to be responsible for fills which I hear only takes about 1 minute, and after you get satisfied with restriction you don't have to go back but once per year, and that fits my lifestyle.

Also anybody with a brain will know if complications occur with the Bypass they are much much more severe, I don't think reflux and spitting up slime to be a serious complication, it's a behavior modification type situation, and if things go wrong I can get the saline removed, or worse the band removed.

I'm calling BS on this one!  HA!  OMG!  No way.  Now I know you are just making up info as you go.  Lap bands are a huge and massive cash cow for surgeons.  Placing bands, maintenance on bands, fills, unfills, repositioning the band, removing the band, and finally revising to another surgery type.  Which do YOU think earns more money for a surgeon?  One surgery or four?

You seriously need to stop depending on your support group for information.  You haven't made a single correct claim that you can back with facts yet regarding banding.  You are repeating what you hear from other newbies.  Can you prove this clain with info from Allergan or J&J?  You see, the truth is this.  Allergan bought the band from Inamed.  Inamed started the certification process for surgeons, they had to be taught by a proctor, the proctor had to have 100 bands under his belt, and if the surgeon had a high complication rate such as infections and such, they revoked their certification thus, they couldn't buy bands.  Allergan bought the band and they wanted to sell LOTS of bands!  TONS of bands.  They cut the proctor requirements down to the teacher only needed to have placed 10 bands to teach another surgeon and they returned all the certifications to the bad surgeons with horrific complication stats.  As of last month nobody has bought Allergan, they have been trying for over a year to sell the band because it's a dying breed.  No takers, as of last month only a liquidation company was looking at buying.  But if there is updated info, feel free to post it.

OMG, I am about to pull my hair out here.  I don't know how to explain this in more simple terms.  Esophageal damage, stomach necrosis (that is where the blood supply is cut off from the stomach and it dies), liver damage from adhesions, perforated spleens and the list goes on.  How do you explain that bands have to be reversed at a rate of 1000x more than bypass?  Repeated surgeries are not safe.  Can you understand that?  How do you explain that the fix for a damaged stomach or esophagus due to banding IS BYPASS????

You know what?  I think you should get a band.  I think nobody around here deserves one more than you!  I think you should make a promise with yourself to keep it for life.  I think you should run to your support group and tell them science, facts, and studies are all wrong!  They are the only people that are right.  The doctors are wrong, Allergan is wrong for selling off the band, study authors all lie.  They are just big bad mean liars who want you to fail.  But your support group, they have all the answers.

Enjoy your band. ;o)

I don't have a band or a sleeve.  I had RNY in 2000 and at that time a lady in my group was revising from the band for the same reasons that have been mentioned in this post.  My aunt did not have a weight loss surgery and had sever acid reflux and had to have ALL OF HER TEETH PULLED because they became rotten from the acid.  I have acid reflux really bad now to the point I wake up and food is coming out of my nose and mouth.  It is burning my throat and chest so bad liquids do not stop the burn.  If i eat some type of dry bread it will calm it down after about 15 minutes but for the next couple of days I can still feel the burn.  So I don't know if the band, sleeve, RNY or DS is the best surgery all I am saying is the ACID REFLUX IS A SEVERE COMPLICATION NO MATTER which surgery or without surgery.  We are not talking about get a little burn and take some Tums or something  I'm talking about  a burn so painful a grown AZZ woman is crying and pleading with anyone to please help me.

Not every surgery is right for everyone. Everyone can choose what they want. Just like when reading these posts about the different experiences you take from them what you feel you can use and throw the rest away.  Good luck and whatever choice you make be confident in it.

I'm a revision from band to RNY. I don't want to be negative, just check the number of success rates. The band didn't work for me. I had to revise. I wish I had RNY first time. I had complications like kink and had to have port switched out. Good luck on your search for a new healthy lifestyle.

Thank you, I did not appreciate being insulted. People do not always want to hear the facts I guess so they retaliate with insults.

 QUOTE"

I went into banding surgery nonbiased and came out very biased because it's impossible to not have bias toward something that did so much harm to my body.

The band really is not a good long term option. I say this as a  human being interested in the well being of my fellow human beings.

That statement alone is enough for anyone to go an REALLY do research about the band, and then chose and OPTION that will better suit their WL needs. I never would have wasted the time, money, pain, having a band if I had made an informed, researched, decision. I blame ME first my doctor second , then the band. If I can persuade ONE person to not have a band then I have saved them the time money and weight that they so desperately wish to lose with WLS. Because it's NOT going to happen with the band.cool

I went to a surgeon yesterday, I was torn between the band and sleeve. He started by telling me he doesnt do the band anymore unless a patient really wants it. He does a lot of sleeves. He said if the band worked well for everyone there would be no need for any other surgeries. He said it works very well for some and not well for others and the doc cant tell who it will work well for and who it wil not. The dietician told me the band would be the most difficult for people who are not disciplined. She said that one is the easiest one to "cheat" with.

My surgeon said that many docs are moving away from the band, but I know people who LOVE their band. So it is a personal decision. I cant stand the thought of my stomach being cut off or my intestines being re-routed. Dont confuse yourself by researching too much, but make sure you check out your surgeon thoroughly.

GOod luck!

Thanks for the replys even the negative ones =)..also not sure how to reply to my PM's but thanks for the replys there as well those have been just as helpful.

I don't think I am going to do any WLS . because I am a strong able bodied man who has a good job and a even better wife!!! and no time for complications from ANY  WLS including death I mean who has time for that.

My issue is I overeat the wrong foods and do not exercise.will I eat the wrong foods and not exercise with WLS I'm sure I will then as well.causing even more complications.

Have I tried many diets nope...not many at all just low carbs when I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes...I think I just want the easy way out of my fat suit.can I do it?? well I quit drinking and smoking 25 years ago. I don't see why I cant apply the same willpower and intestinal fortitude (no pun intended) I did with drinking and smoking.

thanks and wish me luck I will need it

Best of luck to you, Fatbill! You can do it.  You're saving yourself a lot of pain and disappointment by avoiding the Lap  Band, I'll tell you that for sure.

Best of luck to you. I hope you change your name to ThinBill real soon.
