Rex Ryan was on CNN this morning talking about losing weight and KEEPING IT OFF with his band that he got placed in early 2010.

He mentions the KEY to success is the RIGHT SURGEON, and follow ups. He mentioned that having a surgeon THAT BELIEVE in the lap band and educate the patient on how to use it, and follow patient progress is KEY to short and long term success.

Patient and surgeon has to work as a team for optimal success.

Original Lap Band * 9/30/2005 * 4cc 10cm band*,  lost 130 pounds. 7 Great years!

Revision surgery to AP small lap band *11/13/2012*, due to large hiatal hernia. I am hopeful about continuing my band journey uneventful and successful. I loved what my old band did for me and I am looking forward for my new band to Keep my weight downsmiley

How can he talk about "long term success" when he's only had a band since 2010?

I dunno...I guess he figures it's long enough...LOL....I am sure he is fully aware that "issues can pop up anytime down the road" anyone who has a lap band and don't realize that, should not have one.

But I guess he's trying to make the best of it as long as he is having sustained success and not having issues.

My concern is that anytime someone speaks to the media about the Lap-Band that a bunch of people who don't do any research at all will decide that they, too, need a band because they saw this dude on TV with one. It concerns me how little people know about banding before undergoing such a huge, life altering surgery.   I hope he'll continue to be successful. I just don't think three years is anywhere near "long term," however.

You are right, there will still be uneducated soles out there where the band will continue to be a diasaster.....It's sad that many got the band when it was "popular" and did not do any research on how it was "supposed" to work, they just saw commercials and billboards...LOL...some use to call it the lab band...I saw a nightmare happening about 4 years ago with the band, this is why I use to post warnings, but I was flamed for that and folks did not want to hear it...when I told them that their bands were too tight.

There were MANY people that should not have gotten the band and I am happy many are moving towards the Sleeve now, since it does not require much follow up and maintenance-- unless they have complications.

But I also predict a disaster with the Sleeve too in about 4 more years after it matures and many gain their weight back...

Hey, Nana-

How are you doing with your new band?  Have you done the follow up with Dr. Ku? How is the reflux?

Hi Susan,

I have not experienced reflux or any issues since I had my revision surgery and hernia fixed, things are going well for me so far.

angryWith a prediction like that, ALL WLS's are a disaster since many gain their weight back.

I've had my band since 2007 and it's "matured" quantity of food I can eat in one sitting is 6-12oz depending on the food and how its prepared.  Now eating crap is another story and not WLS specific.
