Well I haven't had a carbonated diet drink in about 2 years, but last week i had some, i let it go flat before i had it.  What is exactly the reason why we shouldn't drink them, does it actually stretch the pouch???  any advice would be helpful...thanks

My doctor told me the reason why they dont want you to have them is they are full of nothing but sugar and calories that we dont need.   He never said I couldnt have it , but he did say why waste your calories on something like that .

I havent had a soda in over two yrs now and dont miss it all to be honest.  I take a little sip of hubby's here and there if we are out and I am thirsty , but to be honest its so sweet and taste like poo poo now that I dont even think twice about it , and I have 2 littlers of soda all the time at my house for the teens that run in and out all the time lol.

But, when I am out on our boat in the summer I do drink carbonated alcohol and think nothing of it .   I know a few people that has had their bands for over 4 yrs now and drinks at least 2 diet cokes a day and their bands are fine , I personally dont get into all the hype that it will damage your band , I just dont believe that .   I believe the doctors tell you that stuff so you wont drink it , because you shouldnt be drinking it to lose weight . That is just my opinion though lol.

And no I dont believe at all it stretches the pouch I think its a scare tactic  used by the doctors

I don't know if there's any evidence of carbonation stretching your pouch.  Most carbonated drinks are empty calories.  The diet drinks are full of chemicals that are not good for you and cause weight gain.  So I am staying away from them.  I had a serious soda addiction before surgery ( I think I drank about a gallon or more a day).  I managed to kick that habit and I don't ever want to go back.  I haven't had a sip in over 4 years.

I haven't had soda or anything carbonated in over 5 years.  I don't miss it one bit.  I agree w/ others in that soda is nothing but sugar and empty calories and I never met a calorie that liked me.  I don't recall *my* actual doctor saying that it stretches your stoma but I do recall it being on the list of food/drink to avoid.

Regardless if it was on the "avoid" list or not I eliminated soda bc I wanted to revert back to healthy eating habits which would aid in my weight loss and part of that process for *me* was to change my eating habits.  I've also completely eliminated coffee and any type of store bought juice and/or juice drink.  I do however make my own juice using fresh veggies and fruits.  (I then take the pulp and add it to chicken or turkey meatloaf.)  I drink nothing bu****er, but that's just me.

My advice is to first ask yourself why did you drink soda after being soda free for 2 years??  Was it out of habit, even from 2 years ago?  How did you feel after you drank it?  If it added no value to your weight loss then just eliminate it.

well, i've always loved sprite zero and after not having one in almost two years i just decided to let one go flat and drink it and it was sooo good.  I drink water, but it just not the same as the sprite zero.  I didn't have any problems after drinking it....

Carol if you can drink it and it dont become a problem for you then there is nothing to worry about .  I love Sprite Zero I drank that alot and Pepsi .

I usually have about five different kinds of soda always here at my house for the kids that run in and out 7 days a week and it dont bother me .

I just got use to drinking my Walmart Cherry Limeade water that is all I drink now and Ice tea about once a week on bowling night.

As long as you dont start abusing the Sprite and drinking that in place of your water , then enjoy your Sprite Zero there is nothing wrong that :o)    IF you start seeing yourself drinking more of the Sprite then your water then get rid of the Sprite dont get back into bad habits again.  Like I said one of the girls always drinks about two Diet Cokes a day but she makes sure her water is also .

She never lets her go flat she just pours it over the ice and drinks it .  The carbonated drinks have never bothered me .

We aren't allowed carbonated drinks, with or without sugar as it is the carbonation it self.  Yes, they said it can cause stretch but it also works on the hunger receptors to actually increase your hunger.  This is the reason most fast food up sale for almost nothing and/or offer refills.  The market strategy is to get you to buy more higher prices items.

It may not be a healthy food choice, but the old advice not to drink anything carbonated is now not generally given. I believe it was a just-in-case instruction and that research has not shown a ban to be necessary. I drink it! Not very often as I am not a fan of sweet drinks. But champagne - oh yes!

But some people find it makes them burp and hurts!

As always, follow your own doc''s advice.

Highest 290, Banded - 248   Lowest 139 (too thin!). Comfort zone 155-165.

Happily banded since May 2006.  Regain of 28lbs 2013-14.  ALL GONE!

But some has returned! Up to 175, argh! Off we go again,

It is still very common here in the USA.  Almost everyone in my January surgery FB group was told the same thing.  Some just not told about the research why.

I did do champagne while unbanded this December.  I had kept the regain off until then.  I'm a believer!

I don't drink it because it hurts even if it's flat and my band is empty. Besides I used to drink A LOT of diet Sprite and I just don't trust myself not to get hooked on it again. It's far too easy to return to old bad habits!
