Lap-Band and Pregnancy
I've had my lap-band for just over 4 years and have lost 170+ lbs. Yesterday, I found out that I'm pregnant for the first time! It's kind of unexpected but my husband and I are getting excited.
Any suggestions about my lap-band? I've been feeling it's a little tight lately and have thought about getting it loosened a teeny bit, but now that I'm pregnant, I'm wondering if I need to have it be even looser? I don't want it to be so loose that I go hog-crazy and gain too much weight, but I want a healthy baby and want to make sure I'm getting enough food for the both of us.
I'll talk to my doctor, of course, but I'd love to get any input from people who have been here.
Thanks!
Julie :)
Wow 170! No small feat!

I work in the Birth Center and I have had several patients who have the LapBand. They do have a slight unfill, but most do not get a total unfill. Remember with the LapBand, sometimes you lose your "sweet spot" if you do a total unfill and it's very difficult to get that "sweet spot" again.
Eat smaller more frequent meals. Having a LapBand and being pregnant is not a problem if you get your calories in. Depending upon your starting weight, your doctor will tell you how much he/she would like you to gain during your pregnancy. It's great that the LapBand doesn't have an malabsorption. It makes pregnancy and lactating much easier.
Congrats! Babies are Wonderful!

Revised to the Sleeve after losing 271 lbs with the LapBand.
Congratulations. I have seen people posting a variety of answers. Some, their docs have required a complete unfill form the get go which I don't understand as the baby isn't taken that much and would think it would put you at a greater risk of slip. Most post getting a slight unfill as you go. Your body retaining water can cause the tightening. Most that end up with a big unfill don't report is untill the third trimester.
I would put in a call to you surgery center and ask them then have a talk with the OB doc.
Good luck with your pregnancy!
Congrats! My DD is 10 months old and in April I will be 4 years post op. I had 2cc's removed during my pregnancy due to tightness in the beginning. As pregnancy progressed I lost restriction due to hormonal changes. I could eat anything and everything. I ended up with a 55 pound weight gain. 6 weeks post op from my c section I started having fills again. I'm proud to say that I am actually 5 pounds less than my pre baby weight. Good luck and enjoy your pregnancy there will be plenty of time to loose the baby weight.
