Ths is different from the Plication where they fold the stomach and put the band on, the banded Sleeve is suppose to prevent it from Stretching.....

Hmm...I think I will just keep my lap band...lol....

It has been reported that in the first year after the sleeve gastrectomy the weight loss is more rapid than seen with the gastric bypass and the total weight loss approaches that reported after the gastric bypass operation (Sleeve Gastrectomy Summit, OOBSJ, 2012).

“We do not have to reinvent the wheel," Fobi said. “Thirty to fifty percent of patients with a sleeve gastrectomy will have progressive weight regain because of the dilation of the sleeve pouch. This minimises the restrictive component of the operation requiring revision surgery, which may be either re-sleeving or conversion of the sleeve gastrectomy to either a gastric bypass or BPD with a switch.”

In an effort to address this loss in the restrictive mechanism of the sleeve gastrectomy, as more and more surgeons use the sleeve gastrectomy as a stand alone operation, there has been the trend towards a very narrow sleeve resulting in a significant leak rate (intractable leaks), strictures and reflux. Banding the sleeve gastrectomy enhances the restrictive mechanism just like banding the gastroplasty operations and gastric bypass operation.

The banded sleeve is different from the gastric sleeve surgery right? I don't know about the banded but the gastric sleeve is irreversible. Are there any major drawbacks of this procedure? Which one of these is better?

Based on this article the Banded Sleeve is going to be similar to the old procedures of the VBG that use to be very popular like the Sleeve is now and surgeons no longer do it due to bile reflux, vomiting, staple line disruption, etc and weight regain.

The Banded Sleeve is the same as the Sleeve Gastrectomy where they remove most of the stomach, but they enhance the procedure by putting a band around the Sleeve to keep it from dilating and stretching. The regular Sleeve will dilate  stretch "dilate", some quicker than others, also this article indicates that those with very tight Sleeves have more complications with leak risks and strictures, so surgeons are making the Sleeve a bit larger - but the larger Sleeve is not effective long term and many regain weight, so the Sleeve procedure is still not perfect as a stand alone operation.

My older sister had the VBG over 25 years ago, it is very similar to the Sleeve, but they don't remove the stomach they just stapled it, with the Sleeve they cut away over 80 percent of the stomach and also staple the stomach.

My sister lived with daily horrific vomiting and after she ate for 25 years, and reflux, it was not like the lap band PBing, like a baby spit up, it was REAL vomiting, and with the lap band vomiting can be controlled if you chew well and not keep the band too tight. My sister also had stomach issues.

But over all it was safe for her, she was never hospitalized with it,  oh I forgot yes she was, they had to end up removing most of her stomach because she developed ulcers from the staples being in her stomach and was just in constant misery and vomit often, she also suffers from Hypoglycemia dumping like syndrome like many Long term Sleevers do, but not as bad as Bypassers dumping.

In the Beginning she lost ALL of her weight, similar to most Sleevers, but over time, she gained it all back, as a matter of fact, SHE still cannot eat a large meal today after 25 years, but the problem is, she can eat too much to maintain her weight without serious dieting.

Regarding which procedure is better for you, you will have to make that decision, the Sleeve seems to be a great procedure for many and most who get the  Sleeve especially virgin Sleevers that are not revision band to Sleeve revision lose very quickly similar to the bypass.

Any time there is something "done" to the stomach after surgery, you will lose weight quickly and a lot of weight it does not matter which procedure, but as the article says, the problem with these surgeries, THEY ARE NOT EFFECTIVE LONG TERM, this is why the have now created a new procedure called Banded Sleeve to tighten the Sleeve long term to keep from gaining weight back. But the Banded Sleeve has the same risks as the lap band whi*****luded migration issues long term.

As you can see there is NO perfect weight loss surgery, they all work great, the lap band is not for everyone just like the Sleeve and Bypass is not a a good choice for everyone, you have to pick a surgery that is right for you and your medical situation.

The lap band was right for me and I am happy with it.

Good luck.

I wouldn't put any kind of band around my stomach.  The sleeve will get bigger over time, but you will only gain weight if you fill up on the wrong foods, the same kind of foods you can't eat with any surgery.

I have had the sleeve for almost five years now, I don't think my stomach has gotten any bigger in the past two years.  The only thing that will make me gain weight is by eating sugar and other refined carbs.

The difference between my sleeve and being banded is that now I can eat the solid protein, veggies, and fruit that it takes to lose weight and keep it off.  When I had a band, ice cream was the only food that felt good.  No I wasn't too tight, even empty eating the foods you are supposed to eat with a band was unpleasant.

If you could not eat solids on an empty band, it's great you got your band out....it's strange how each of our banded experience are....I could always eat solids even on a very restricted band, I just had to chew carefully and stop eating. But when my band was empty both first and second band, it feels like I have no band at all....I am eager to get some restriction on Monday with my second fill.

Most Band to Sleeve revisioners mentioned that the Sleeve works like the band "Should" My band when filled properly has ALWAYS worked for ME, I could only eat small amount of solid protein and get stuffed...

My band is empty and I have to be very careful with what and how I eat.  However, I can eat bread, pizza, if I choose.  I choose to avoid bread because every calorie must count towards daily nutrition goals.  I have lost 17 lb since having my band unfilled last June.

Abstract

Isolated laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is increasingly being used for the treatment of morbid obesity. However, doubts still persist regarding long-term weight loss, and the 5-year results are awaited. Whether the aetiology of failed excess weight loss is the result of an inadequate sleeve or attributable to dilatation of the sleeve is not clear. In an effort to prevent gastric dilatation and increase gastric restriction to promote further weight loss in the long term, we performed a combined procedure of laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding with sleeve gastrectomy. The patient was a 39-year-old woman with a life-long history of obesity and a body mass index of 79.8 kg/m(2). The surgical technique of the laparoscopic adjustable gastric banded sleeve gastrectomy is described. There were no immediate complications, and the patient was discharged home on the third postoperative day. She is doing extremely well on clinic follow-up at 6 weeks. To the best of our knowledge, laparoscopic adjustable gastric banded sleeve gastrectomy, as a primary operation, has not been described in the literature. It is hoped that this combined procedure will be most useful in the super-super obese (body mass index > 60) patients. More patients with a long-term follow-up are necessary to provide definitive conclusions regarding long-term benefits and complications of this combined bariatric procedure.
