New Band!

I am on my pureed phase right now and need some more options! Looking for good, protein based pureed foods.

Also, I'm having the worst upper back pain right in the middle. It hasn't been relieved with anything yet and kept me awake throughout the night. This is my 6th day after surgery. Anyone know if this is related to the surgery, and if there is anything to help it?

Hello...I have a new band too, but my second band, you will have some back/shoulder pain while healing,  I was still on clear liquids my first week and if you are having pain, you may want to remain on clears for a little while longer until you feel no pain, also you may want to sleep in a recliner or sleep with your head on several pillows in an elevated up position and not put pressure either of your sides while healing and a heat pad helped me also.

I progressed to full liquids my 2nd week and boy did I have pain too, I was eating very watery grits and mashed potatoes and I went back to clear soups and I felt better, so you may want to progress as tolerated with no pain. I drink Unjury protein drinks they are very good and are loaded with protein.

Some of the pureed foods that I find yummy is purred tuna/egg salad unfortunately during this phase it is difficult to find anything yummy, the first 3 weeks are the worst. I lived on popsicles, jello, and soups, the first 4-6 weeks is not about protein or losing weight is about healing....I can't wait to eat more soft chicken recipes and refried bean/cheese and salsa are my favorite mushier foods.

Humus is a good soft protein that is pureed, but I can't eat it without salsa and chips...lol.

If Dr Curry is your surgeon (he has the band himself) I am sure his nutritionist has a lot of food ideas during this phase.

Good luck

Thank you! That all was very helpful! Refried beans and cheese sounds sooo good..when did you start that? like soft or regular foods probably?

Everyone is different on when they start mushy foods, I would think MOST banders can safely start about 3-4 weeks post op as tolerated, but check with your surgeon, you don't want to progress too quickly, I would think 1 week of clears and 2 weeks of fulls and then 2 weeks of mushy foods for most people. I did with my first band and I am doing that with my second band as tolerated. I still can't eat but about 4 teaspoons at a time, do you have any restriction?

Also my back and shoulder pain is now gone..YAY! I have no port pain which I am happy about, I had horrible port pain with my first band for a long time, this time -- it went away quickly, of course I slept sleeping upward without pressure on my abdomen and port area and in a recliner some time, and so far no port pain.

Not sure how far out you are, but if a couple/few days it would be the gas.  Walk, walk walk and sip sip sip.  Get tha****er in.  Also we were told to absolutely NOT sleep in a recliner.  Yep, right in our discharge orders, DO NOT sleep in a recliner due to increase risk of blood clots.  Don't ask me why or how just letting you know what I was ordered.  I would at least ask your surgeon before do.

Make sure you are walking a lot because you could still be having gas pain too.

Any soup or meat you like can be put in a blender and pureed. Add a little Miracle Whip Lite or broth to. The meats to make them juicy. Lived on ham, chicken, or mashed fish!

Congrats on being banded!

My guess is the back pain is due to the gas pumped into your gut during surgery. Moving around a lot can help that.

The pain is probably gas and mine dissipated after day 7. Heat also helps so if you have a heating pad plug it in. Keep walking and for some weird reason hot drinks were helpful. Good luck and welcome to the losers bench!
