Please help me understand this...seriously.

I was just reading the revision board -- and why did I do that, of some lap banders say they keep getting food stuck and throw up all the time with their band, and want to get a revision to the Sleeve...BUT.....they also say they have no restriction. But the Sleeve is restrictive too, so the same rule should apply of chewing the food properly right?

How can this be?

I am a very "logical person" maybe it's the programmer in me..that is always trying to figure things out, but trust me I had the smaller band for over 7 years and when my band was tight...IT WAS TIGHT, I could barely get liquids down, BUT...I was not constantly getting anything stuck because I KNEW I was too tight to eat but a few teaspoons of anything so I did not dare to eat solids when I KNEW I was too tight.

Now another scenario could be someone having a stretched pouch and constantly hungry and CAN eat a whole lot and this probably can result in throwing up daily if you CAN eat solid food like a burger and get the bread or very thick food stuck and vomit every day.

Could it be that some people have problems with their esophagus and food gets stuck there? Even with no saline? How could a revision help that because you can get a stricture with the bypass and Sleeve if you have a problem with your esophagus.

But how can you get food stuck every day when you say you don't have restriction? This just does not make sense to me...

Another thing I can't understand, people say they have heartburn and reflux with the band, but they are going to revise over to the Sleeve to get rid of GERD? How can this be?

Hi,

I don't know anything about the sleeve! What I can tell you is my band experience. My band has a mind of it's own. There are days with no fluid in my band that I could get stuck on two bites of yogurt and the very next day be able to eat my measured meals.I could have eaten anything and everything I wanted because i had no fluid and no restriction but I measured my food. So I think it is possible that you could not have restriction and still get stuck all the time. It has happened to me.

See in the old days with the first generation bands if you had problems with no fluid meant you had slippage, have you had your band checked thoroughly? Because "IDEALLY" with an "EMPTY BAND" it should feel as though you have no band at all.

Remember all band slippages are not URGENT, you can live with a small slippage and not even know it, the band may not work right though.

I just find it very odd and I've never ever experienced this even with my small pouch dilation (small slip), when my band was empty or almost empty, I felt normal as though I did not have a lap band period, I could eat normally with no signs of restriction and no stuck feeling at all. the only times I've gotten food stuck is when I've had a good amount of restriction in my band or really tight --NOT with NO RESTRICTION.

I think a lot of people are living with band slippages, and don't know it because when the band starts to slip it gets tighter and tighter and tighter until there are problems getting water down even with no saline. That is the NUMBER one SIGN of slippage is onset of very tight restriction without a recent fill.

But I have to tell you, if I was getting stuck on food with NO SALINE, that would scare me and I would be looking to get my band out or get a new band ASAP because this is not normal and sounds like an undiagnosed slip, remember all slips don't show on Upper Gi's.

Also over the years there have been MANY that have gotten bands that were too small for their anatomy and they could never get a fill because any fill would make the band too tight this is why they started making bigger bands, but still surgeons can't tell if the band alone is going to be too small.....for a GOOD working band there should always be wiggle room....and the band should not cause problems empty.

Also, if someone is getting food stuck, there has to be some restriction somewhere, even on an empty band.

I guess my point was how can you get food stuck often with NO RESTRICTION....NO RESTRICTION TO ME IS THE SAME AS PRE OP ...NO BAND....that was my point.

I hope you are able to resolve your band issues, you may need to get your band replaced if you are having these type of issues especially on a empty band.

My band looks perfect! I am a logical person also but the band can't be explained with logic. Trust me I was ready to get it out but it seems to have settled down now although It does act up from time to time. I am giving it 7 more months if it isn't working and still having a mind of its on it is coming out. There won't be a second band or another WLS at this point. This journey has been painful enough with disappointing results for all the work I have put in. There isn't an reason anyone can give me except my body is sensitive and I can feel every aspect of the band. i can feel my food in the pouch, I can feel it go through the pouch, I can feel hot and cold things all the way down to the point where it is scary and a bit creepy. I would say yet that I have given up or that I hate my band. I am still holding out hope that I can figure out a way to make it work.

Good question! I can understand why those that have had good experiences with their bands would be confused.

Nana it's hard to explain. It just is. I know you have heard me refer to my band as a "psych band". That is b/c it can be so unpredictable! I have eaten dense protein like chicken/steak and have it do down just fine, then a few hrs. late yogurt gets stuck.. I  know. Makes NO sense at all, right?! In my experience the band level of "restriction" can change from day to day, moment to moment, and when I would sit down to eat a meal, I would never know till I took that first bite or 2 if it was going to be a "good food day" or a "bad food day".

Also when some (many) of us say we have "no restriction", we are referring to the "restriction" that was described to us in the Allergan and Realize adds and also by the Drs. and office staff. For instance: I knew prior to getting banded that the band is often tight in the morning. I always assumed that that meant that it was tight then, but adequate restriction the rest of the time. For me it was often tight in the morning, then the rest of the day could eat anything and everything.

Now I never experienced "getting food stuck and throw up all the time". I never threw up that much, and as far as food getting stuck...........well you just NEVER knew when it would occur.

~keep getting food stuck and throw up all the time with their band, and want to get a revision to the Sleeve...BUT.....they also say they have no restriction. But the Sleeve is restrictive too, so the same rule should apply of chewing the food properly right?~

Many that I have spoke with have a horrible time with stuck/throw up incidents! It's very sad.

Now as far as getting stuck with sleeve since it is restrictive, it appears to be totally different. I know tons of sleevers, and you just don't hear about that like you do with the band. Also one thing I hear consistantly from revisioners is: "the VSG works like the band was suppose to work!"

~Could it be that some people have problems with their esophagus and food gets stuck there? Even with no saline? How could a revision help that because you can get a stricture with the bypass and Sleeve if you have a problem with your esophagus.~

I have heard from many bandsters that continue to get stuck after having all the fluid removed. I believe that is generally caused by the scar tissue.

You can get a stricture with RNY or VSG, it's a relatively small % of those who do, as opposed to such a HUGE % of bandsters getting stuck.

I have explained it to you as best I can. I agree............it makes no sense. It just is. :-(

can a slip happen with no restriction (no liquid in band)? I recently had to have all liquid removed in mine. I have had no issues sense but can  i t happen?

Yes, band slips can happen even with no fluid in the band, due to repeated vomiting or coughing, failed sutures, incorrect band placement, untreated hiatal hernias, and the position of the moon in the sky.

When my band was emptied last June, I was cautioned that the risk of a slip was very high in the first few days after.  Picture a loose ring on a finger....

How can you tell if it has slipped when it is emptied? I

I was told that I might have pain, reflux, vomiting. I had a follow up Esophogram 5 weeks later to check on the band. I still had very tight restriction, in spite of having my band emptied. I still do almost 6 months later.
