First let me say the band has not failed me however I have managed to put on 20lbs that I lost due to not eating that right things.  I'm almost 3 years out and was doing really good till being a too tight and having some fluid removed and over the summer totally got off track, now I'm back from vacation in which I ate nothing but bad food and knew my band was too loose due to eating a cheeseburger bun and all not once but like 3 times.  I will be signing up to do a half marathon in May as soon as registration opens next month that way I have to hold myself accountable.  Has anyone else started running from really doing nothing, I never have been a runner but it is on my things to do before I turn 40 and I could use all the advice I can get.

Well I can't run because of lung issues but I would suggest start slow unless you are an avid exerciser. But lots of icy hot, great for sore muscles.mailGood luck to you!

Hi Angieleigh!

Thats great that you have a goal to shoot for!!!!! It has helped me so much in the past. Especially during the holidays.

I have done the Disney Half twice, 2 yrs in a row. Its so exhilarating! I did not run, I walked, 15 minute miles (a Disney requirement for time). Disney has on their website  the Jeff Galloway approach.   (copy & paste) http://www.rundisney.com/training/running/    You can open a PDF with their recommended training scheduale. Its great information !!!! I did it brieflythe Galloway Approach, and I actually did a 5k (not through a registered race, but practice). Yes I was sore the first few days, but, you do quickly can get over it. It is important to do the recommended paces they tell you to do.

Another common program is The "Couch to 5K"   http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml   I know many who have done it and they can't believe how easy it was to follow! They have apps too .

Make sure to be professionally fitted for shoes!  Go to a store that specializes in running shoes (not the one necessarily at the malls with kids who know nothing about their products) Some of the smaller stores host training clinics and really give you personalized attention, they are also runners . They see how you walk or run. I injured myself, I  made the mistake of using the same style shoe I use to address my foot problems when I was obese.  I continued with that style shoe for a few years even at my healthy weight.  BIG mistake!!!!! Those shoes were fine when I was obese, but now my feet & body had different requirements. So I needed to be reevaluated, or I would definitely injure myself.

Online websites:

Also go to runners world!  http://www.runnersworld.com/   Great articles, lots of inspiration!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Active.com               http://www.active.com/

***Also go to the fitness forum here at OH. They have some great tips, alot of them there have done several races and triathlons. Lots of wisdom to be found there.

Which race are you thinking about doing? Again go to a local running store, they will have tons of info. and they will know of local training groups in your area. It's easier doing this with other people who have done it before. There are always folks there who are also doing it for their first time. They tend to train in pace groups, so you don't have to feel intimidated by it all. I STRONGLY recommend it!!!

Let me know how it all goes, keep me posted

i've heard of the "couch to 5k" program. one of the women in my group did it and she participated in her first 5k a month or so ago. prior to the program she could barely walk, going up and down stairs and she'd get winded.
