What are you eating today (Thursday) or yesterday?

It is Thursday today, isn't it?

My work shift yesterday completely fried my brain. We were short staffed so of course that's the day when every resident in a 500 mile radius of the store decided to go shopping at JCP. Fortunately, I have today off. Unfortunately, I'm going to spend most of the day getting my car's tires rotated and balanced. Doesn't that sound like fun?

Eating lunch during my 15-minute break yesterday did not go well. I was too frazzled and rushed to pay close enough attention to my eating skills and just did not feel well when it was time to face the music again. And this is nothing compared to what it's going to be like when holiday shopping gets up to full speed. I may have to resort to bringing soup to work for break time rather than attempt to eat solid food. Soup is very low on the satiety scale, but it's nutrition.

Today's food plan:
B: protein latte
S: scrambled egg beater w/ cheese
S: ricotta cheesecake fluff w/ blueberry fiber crisps
L: leftover chicken sausage & kale salad
S: Havarti cheese
S: (raw) sugar snap peas
D: shrimp & barley salad, (cooked) sugar snap peas
S: almond, craisin & sesame snack mix

The Extend cinnamon fiber crisps I tried yesterday tasted like lightly toasted cardboard covered with dust. I think the dust was the uncooked cornstarch that's supposed to give the crisps long-lasting blood sugar control. Blech.

This morning's exercise class is yoga/Pilates. I sorely need some stretching right now (both mental and physical).

Hi Jean, I have a question. Do you ever run out of creative ideas for legal and nutritious things to eat? Do you ever find yourself eating the same foods over and over for convenience? And if so, is that ever a problem?  I'm curious because this tends to be a problem for me whenever I am on some sort of weight loss regimen.

That's an excellent question.

I'm fortunate that I love to cook and enjoy planning interesting, nutritious, delicious meals (most of the time, anyway). (BTW - there's a section on meal-planning in Bandwagon Cookery).

I do tend to eat certain foods over and over again for convenience - mostly breakfast and snacks. I'm a morning person but as I get older, it takes me longer to get up to speed in the morning, so it's helpful to have something easy and reliable to eat then. It's helpful to have easy and reliable snacks because so often I'm in a hurry or distracted or at work when I need to eat a snack.

The other thing in my favor is that I'm an omnivore. I've been that way since childhood. I grew up with a brother and two cousins who were all fussy eaters. They would only eat foods from a very short list - maybe 8-10 items on the list. I would eat anything. My very short list is the list of foods I don't care for, like pickled beets.

In the past, boredom during a weight loss regimen was a problem for me, too. I'm probably the only person in the northern hemisphere who gained weight on Atkins. It bored me to tears...and to non-compliance. A friend of mine lost 10 lbs on a cabbage soup diet that I couldn't stick with for even one day. Food boredom is dangerous for me because it sends me off in search for the junky foods that I really don't need to be eating.

If you give me lists of favorite foods, problem foods, and foods that you just plain hate, maybe I can make some suggestions for an eating plan that won't send you astray after a while. I'm not a dietitian, but I'm pretty good at meal-planning.

Thursday --

I am in chilly Chicago -- in a hotel with no refrigerator, so I am eating out this week.

B -- banana in my room while I got dressed this morning

L -- cup of Beef Barley soup (ate about 3/4 of it) and 1/2 a Tuna fish sandwich (ate the tuna and 1/2 of the bread

D -- not sure, but probably fish tacos (I eat the fish and the slaw, but not the tortillias)

S -- I have a Luna bar if I want it later tonight

I have an other banana to eat on the way to the airport tomorrow -- and a Luna bar for the plane, then back to a normal weekend.

I was able to get a nice hour-long walk in yesterday
