Do you plan your meals in advance?

On the What Are You Eating Today thread the other day, Bette posted that she can't think too far in advance. What about you? Do you plan your meals in advance, or do you wing it? Either way you answer, how does that approach support your weight loss or weight maintenance goals?

During the week I pretty know what I am eating especially breakfast and lunch because its usually the same thing .  Dinner pretty much that morning .

Now, I wing it on the weekends and especially if hubby is home because I fix what he likes to eat , (  he works away from home during the week )or we are busy doing things and we go out to eat

Weekends are always rough on me .  Hubby is home, kids are in and out, and I have no Zumba .    I dont know what we are eating till its almost time for that meal .

I'm with Steelerfan, during the week, I pretty much have dinners, lunches and breakfast planned out.  Come the weekend.........oh boy, free for all!  ha ha

Planning definitely helps keep me out of trouble.  Spontaneity always chooses indulgent foods.

Spontaneity always chooses indulgent foods.

Ain't that the truth!

I am terrible with planning ahead. Breakfast and lunch are easy because I choose from a small list of things. Dinner..... well, mostly I think about it shortly before I do it. I am trying to get better about it and at least think about it in the morning.

If I plan ahead I can enter all of it into my food log and see where the protein and calories end up. If there are changes that is fine because I know where I am at. If I don't plan ahead I am more likely to graze, eat junk, and end up way off. Hence the trying to plan better.

My guess is that ADHD makes planning a challenge for you...but it's still worth a shot!

i don't always know what i'm having for lunch, but i plan out the evening meals two weeks in advance. it helps to know what i'll be using in my cabinets and what i need to buy. i was meal planning well before i ever had WLS. it helped to keep to a budget for cooking. when i had WLS, i adjusted what i was eating, knowing that certain foods were off limits because i haven't been able to tolerate them since having the band (ie steak, anything sticky or doughy).

I think meal planning is easier for me because I, too was doing it for years before my band surgery, though I only plan 1 week ahead. I started doing that when my husband was working 3rd shift and I was working days and we seldom got to talk to each other about household stuff like meals. With a written plan, we were both aware of what needed to be bought or defrosted or whatever.

Planning helps me stay on track for sure.  I have a general plan for the week when I go grocery shopping.  I tend to stick to a limited menu.  I plan in the morning not only what I will eat, but approximately what time.  This helps me spread out my food across the day and not get too hungry.  The times vary a little depending on when I get up and what I have going on that day- I don't work.  I used to journal what I eat, but have gotten into such a routine I don't find it necessary.  It started to feel too much like a "diet".  Interesting thread Jean.  Thanks

Spreading my food out over the day helps me avoid getting too hungry, too. And that helps me avoid eating problems at meal time.
