Funny. When *I* developed MY hiatal hernia, you insisted that it was because I was keeping my band too tight and vomiting all the time.

I guess one CAN happen to ANYone, huh?

Good luck.

Funny I have a hiatal hernia, but I do not have vomiting or reflux, but again, I removed saline when I started to have burning and shortness of breath, but right now even with a big ole hernia, no vomiting or band slippage, But I guess if I igorned all my symptoms and moved foward with fills with my hernia my problems could get really ugly.

You are right my symptoms actually started on a loose band, but again I don't have slippage. I have no idea what your problems were, i just repeated what you mentioned.

Original Lap Band * 9/30/2005 * 4cc 10cm band*,  lost 130 pounds. 7 Great years!

Revision surgery to AP small lap band *11/13/2012*, due to large hiatal hernia. I am hopeful about continuing my band journey uneventful and successful. I loved what my old band did for me and I am looking forward for my new band to Keep my weight downsmiley

A hiatal hernia most certainly is not a contraindication for any WLS type.  It is just that the better surgeons knew how to fix them and they knew that no WLS is great with a huge hernia.  It's the band mill surgeons that most often do not know to fix it during surgery.  Bands are known to cause hiatal hernias or make existing hernias much worse.

If you want to keep your band, do it.  Just fix the hernia.  No big deal and problem solved.

You have been very cruel to many people with band problems.  Karma?

I think if anyone deserves a band it is you.  I think you should fix your hernia and keep your band.

My previous surgeon was not a band mill (and did business in one of the top hospitals in northern virgina dedicated only to bariatric patients, and also a center of excellence), I got excellent care when I had my lap band installed with NO problems, not sure why my hernia was not fixed during my band placement. Perhaps it was not that big at the time and it never affected my weight loss in the first 5 years post op. However, I've changed surgeons since then and I am more pleased with my current aftercare.

I have not been cruel to people that had band problems, I've always supported people over the years that suffered complications, there is a BIG difference in those who are seeking support/guidance for their complications and those who are here daily being MEAN and SNARKY  to new lap banders and anyone intererested in a lap band or suggest to those who still have a lap band are doomed to the same fate they suffered. Everyone is unique in terms lap band issues, SURE there are some people that abused their bands to cause complications, they've got my support too, but I do NOT support band bashers.

P.S....don't celebrate and pop your wine bottles yet..I still have my band ;)

Just a note on dumping.  It is a very big deal with RNY.  The sleeve "dumping" is not as common as with the RNY.  I would stay away from the RNY if that is a fear of yours.  You also have the same stomach with a DS.  You can also "dump" with the band if you eat the wrong stuff and it hits the valve all at once.  Not common but, you can get it to some degree with any surgery or even with no surgery.

I wouldn't wish the problems with the band on anyone!

BAND REMOVED 9-4-12-fought insurance to get sleeve and won! Sleeved 1/22/13! Five years out and trying to get that last 15 pounds back off.

Naomi,

I've always wondered if my hiatal hernia (which my original surgeon was supposed to fix when he placed my band, but didn't) shouldn't be fixed. My current surgeon keeps telling me no, but everything I've read in the past 5 or so years says that hiatal hernias are a contraindication for the adjustable gastric band. I'd want to keep my band and fix the hernia, but I have to wonder if fixing your hernia would be a surgical challenge because of the presence of your band.

Jean,You and I share the same thoughts, I am wondering if it would be too complicated to fix an EXISTING hernia with a lap band already in place. I will ask this question to my surgeon when I meet them next week. I read a published article this morning on repairing a hernia with a lap band and other weight loss surgeries.

All surgeries carry additional risk AFTER repairing the hernia, the additional risk for the lap band was erosion. Now my current surgeon told me that surgeons only repair hernias ONLY if they are medium to large and they leave small hernias alone.

Thanks for your advice Jean I really appreciate it.

There is absolutely no reason to wait for a hernia to become huge before fixing it.  They are already in there during WLS, it's a simple suture most times.  That's all.  ANY hiatal hernia should be repaired instead of waiting for it to rip further before repairing.  The only surgeons who don't fix it are the ones that want to be paid for another surgery to repair it.  Any hiatal hernia small or large should be repaired before WLS because it will cause problems.  Bands are the surgery type that causes them, not all surgery types.

Not repairing a hernia during WLS is like not washing all your dishes but leaving one out to wait and see if it gets more dirty.

Maybe you should find a surgeon that does what is correct instead of agreeing with all your opinions.

Obese people are at risk for a hernia, not all WLS types.

My current surgeon is already giving me the option to repair my hernia -- my current surgeon did not place my lap band, I've since changed surgical practices 2 years ago, I need to talk to them next week to find out what other options they have on the table.
