So..my Lap Band surgeon is talking about the Sleeve and options for me...

Not sure why my hernia was not fixed, I got my band over 7 years ago, surgeons nowadays are repairing hernia routinely now during lap band installation or getting the Sleeve, sometimes they will not touch a hernia if its not too big, based on conversations with my new surgeon, they don't repair small hernias especially if you are not having symptoms. I am grateful that my previous lap band surgeon installed my band properly and it still works going on 8 years.

Original Lap Band * 9/30/2005 * 4cc 10cm band*,  lost 130 pounds. 7 Great years!

Revision surgery to AP small lap band *11/13/2012*, due to large hiatal hernia. I am hopeful about continuing my band journey uneventful and successful. I loved what my old band did for me and I am looking forward for my new band to Keep my weight downsmiley

Many bariatric surgeons are now listing hiatal hernia as a post op complication of banding.

Yep, it's true Hiatal Hernia's CAN be a complication from banding, but I believe I've had my hernia for years –(undiagnosed), since I've had the exact same issues before I got my band placed when I learned I had GERD, esophagitis and gastritis about 13 years ago when I had two endoscopies done that was back in 2009.

I remember traveling to Chicago with my girlfriend to the Oprah show in 1999 and I had this horrible inflammation from GERD and I could not enjoy my meals and I had those same horrible chest pains, it was HORRIBLE BEFORE I even thought about a lap band.

It took about 6 months before I totally healed, had to stay on Nexium and I had difficulty swallowing and the breathing problems from the esophagitis, with all this misery and I lost about 70 pounds during this time, but eventually gained it all back when I felt better, so in MY case, I cannot blame it on the band, it’s part of my medical history, it was probably was cause by eating too much and too much spicy food, since my band was loose for almost a year.

And yes there are complications for EVERY TYPE of weight loss surgery including the lap band below are complications that can happen with every type of surgery:

LATE COMPLICATIONS
COMPLICATIONS OF SPECIFIC BARIATRIC PROCEDURES
Roux-en-Y gastric bypass
- Gastric remnant distension
- Stomal stenosis
- Marginal ulcers
- Cholelithiasis
- Ventral incisional hernia
- Internal hernias
- Short bowel syndrome
- Dumping syndrome
- Metabolic and nutritional derangements
- Renal failure
- Postoperative hypoglycemia
- Change in bowel habits
- Failure to lose weight and weight regain
Gastric banding
- Stomal obstruction
- Port infection
- Band erosion
- Band slippage and gastric prolapse
- Port malfunction
- Esophagitis
- Esophageal dilatation
- Hiatus hernia
Sleeve gastrectomy
- Bleeding
- Stenosis
- Gastric leaks
Vertical banded gastroplasty
- Staple line disruption
- Obstruction
- Erosion of mesh band
- Reflux
- Vomiting
Biliopancreatic diversion and duodenal switch
Jejunoileal bypass
- Electrolyte imbalances
- Renal failure
- Cirrhosis

Biliopancreatic diversion and duodenal switch
Jejunoileal bypass
- Electrolyte imbalances
- Renal failure
- Cirrhosis

For the OP and anyone reading this post, those three procedures are NOT the same procedure. The BPD without the DS is a distal RNY (it has a pouch and the intestines of a very strict DS, the Jejunoileal bypass is not done by any ethical DS surgeon and has not been done since the 1970's, and the DS mentioned is the Hess method.

OF the complications listed, the only one that applies to the DS is the electrolyte imbalances which can happen with ANY surgery of a person gets dehydrated by not getting enough liquids in their system.

I am sorry you are dealing with this but please do not spread inaccuracies about the other surgeries.

Liz

Dear Southernlady,

I never post in misinformation, if you want to argue with the surgeons/doctors that provided this cited information that sees this information from a medical standpoint here ya go

And some  references included: I just simply answered a question regarding ALL weight loss surgeries carry a complication risk...and I am very grateful that my (minor) complication still allows me to function and not disrupt my life and can be easily fixed.

IF you are gonna do a list, make sure you put EACH of them separate...they are NOT the same surgery...that is where your misinformation lies. http://www.dsfacts.com/history-of-duodenal-switch.html

If you read the link that I provided you will CLEARLY SEE, that I copied and pasted their complications list of each perspective surgery, this again is cited information, I can't help that they did not separate the DS, maybe you can write to them with your concerns.

Coping and pasting INaccurate info does not make it correct.

They even called anything OTHER than three surgeries outdate...and the DS is FAR from outdated. And the authors are NOT surgeons who even do the DS.

Here is a newer article for you and others: http://www.dsfacts.com/Duodenal-Switch-Compared-to-other-wei ght-loss-surgeries.html (also listed here: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22189411)

Yes all WLS has risks...all SURGERY has risks; my husband's cousin just died of complications of lap gallbladder removal.  That said, each of us is different.  We will all have unique experiences in life and in WLS.  We have to listen to all experiences in order to determine our next step.  Trying to discredit a post by listing all complications for all surgeries isn't going to help you make the very important decision you need to make very soon...keep the band, lose the band or lose the band and revise.  Only you can decide for yourself.

BTW what is Erosion of mesh band?

They used to place different types of bands on types of gastric bypasses and gastro plasty weight loss surgeries years ago, some people developed erosion from constant vomiting, it was a horrible surgery and they no longer really offer it.

And I think that this post was very supportive and polite.
